The side characters in this one are more interesting than in the first book, but they weren't enough to save the story from the world's dumbest detective. Every success he has is either because he stumbles into it or because he follows someone else's (usually his girl Friday’s) advice. Yet, he also has a habit of not really listening when so many people give him the biggest hints to ever hint. He is so oblivious and selectively curious. At one point a character just happens to know a great place to hide a body and even says to him “I swear it, Andy, this one wasn’t me, and I need you to believe that” and he HAS ZERO FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONS. I mean “what do you mean ‘this one?’” would have been the first thing out of anyone's mouth, but not the great detective's. The way he handles evidence is also extremely frustrating.
And he is still way too emotionally involved in everything. The self pitying, sad sack routine got real old, real quick - you deserved better, Gene. I saw most of the plot “revelations” coming a mile away, yet I don't really know anything more about Andy than I learned in the first few pages of book one.

The second book is just as good as the first, though there is a shift in tone. Ensconced about a gay bar, Andy is entering into a classic noir PI role, ready to help the queer population with their unique challenges. It’s gritty, occasionally surprising, and very atmospheric. Well done!

This just dug deeper into the characters and I loved it. Really fleshed out these characters and this world, even though it's our real world. And I loved the mystery. It was one of the ones where I knew the who but not the why.
