Surprised I didn't like this more, though I was told just before I finished it that the Muirs' translation is considered pretty faulty, so it might have been that.
nie rozumiem. życie nie ma sensu. żadna książka nie prawiła mnie w takie osłupienie. spodziewałam się wielu zakończeń, ale nie takiego.

I really enjoyed this, Kafka will always hold a special place in my heart. A beautiful perspective of feeling like you're doing everything you can and but staying stagnant, with no end in sight except the final judgment. Being tangled up in what is the legal system which feels like an omnipotent force that lives and breathes, and the characters that surround it feel like jokes. A strong feeling of hopelessness after being resilient for so long. I wonder: was Josef truly innocent of his crime in the end? I believe he was, and that the court was displaying an abuse of its power, especially with the first scene in the courthouse where Josef is being treated unfairly, and calls the lawyers and judge out on it.
Whether it was on purpose or not, leaving Josef's crime unknown was a beautiful choice, leaving even more of the story feeling tangled and confused, creating a stronger juxtaposition between Josef and the law. Josef is such a fascinating character, and his confidence just slowly deteriorates while things become more distorted. The final lines of this book are extremely memorable, and show the true intentions that Kafka left for the character of Josef K.
Heartbreaking that this was never completed, but it's beautiful in that way too. Depending on which version is read gives a different perspective and I find that fascinating. Given that, there are so many different ways the story can be interpreted, but the text is final, just like the priest tells Josef. Josef sees the doorman as being manipulated and conned, and the priest says he is simply doing his honest duty. Is the court and the characters manipulating Josef, or are they simply obeying their duty to the court? I believe both to be true.

Joseph K is one day arrested, but he doesn't know why. This was the story of him talking to a bunch of people about his trail. Not my cup of tea

reflective
Absurd, humorous, but also noticeably unpolished. There’s a lot to reflect on in this relatively slim novel and I understand why it is so revered. Like Joseph K, I too grappled with the court system and trying to make sense of the informational tangle. It’s quite uncomfortable that Joseph is shoved into this parallel world where everybody else are in the know, and Joseph is isolated by his ignorance. What begins as a normal life is slowly infected with strangeness that seem to grow and appear in more and more areas of life.
The execution of Joseph shocked me. The court system was so impenetrable that I did not contemplate what conviction meant. These last paragraphs completely re-contextualized the whole story for me. Due to the silliness of the court, of the complete irrationality in most things that occurred, I viewed the court as strange but no necessary as having teeth. If the ending is a brutal death, the humor becomes even darker, and the logic of the system utter cruelty. There’s no place to turn to, nothing to do but accept the absurd situation you’re trapped in.
“Never attract attention to yourself! Stay calm, however much it goes against your character! Try to gain some insight into the size of the court organism and how, to some extent, it remains in a state of suspension, and that even if you alter something in one place you'll draw the ground out from under your feet and might fall, whereas if an enormous organism like the court is disrupted in any one place it finds it easy to provide a substitute for itself somewhere else.”
