Spoilers!!!!

This would have been a five star read for me, but I hated the way she handled Grady assaulted Violet. Violet just forgave him. That it a terrible message to send out to girls. It doesn't matter that he was drunk and that Jay stopped him. Nothing makes trying to force yourself on someone. She still should have told her uncle at least. If he did it once, he will almost definitely try again on someone else.

Okay. End rant.

Really 3 stars for the plot as the story drags a bit and nothing really exciting. An extra star though for the awesome Jay!

I liked the best friends to lovers relationship development and thought Violet had potential, but by the end of the book I wanted to smack her. If you know a serial killer is after you, do you 1. attend Homecoming with your sprained ankle, 2. leave your friends and stay behind in a secluded bathroom away from the crowd, and 3. go with the killer willingly because you don’t want to make a fuss? I really hope the answer is no. This girl not only sat there holding a blunt metal object (her crutches) while the murderer took the time to explain his master plan with his gun still holstered, wasting the opportunity to smash him over the head, she then decided to leave with him and let him kill her because she didn’t want to bother anyone by screaming. Only when the murderer threatened to shoot her boyfriend did she knock him down with her crutches, at which point the couple TURNED AROUND AND WALKED AWAY without disarming the dude, leaving him with the gun in his hand. They survive through no merit of their own only because the police show up at that moment. I have no words.

This was a great read and I really, really enjoyed it! I loved the creepiness and the suspense; the not really having any solid clues as to who the killer could be that keeps you guessing and changing your mind as the story progresses, wondering whether it's someone you've encountered yet or is a new character altogether. Derting's writing seriously sucked me in and I just couldn't get enough of the book, I couldn't put it down!
I really liked the characters - although, at times, I found Violet to be a little self-centered and it grated on my nerves a bit, as well as Jay sometimes being overly cocky. I did really like the relationship dynamics between the two of them, and I thought that their friendship and Violet's growing crush was very realistic and relatable. However,
Spoilerwhen Violet and Jay did finally become a couple ~is that really a spoiler though? because we totez all saw that coming~
, I felt it was kind of OTT.
It's safe to say I'll definitely be picking up the sequels :3

Four solid stars. The plot was gripping and interesting, the style of writing - fluent, most of the characters were likeable. Definitely recommended.

cool story! action, suspense, serial killer, tomboy named Violet (what?), a little romance, a little paranormal, and a whole lotta synesthesia!

I really enjoyed this book...I could not put it down and when I did it was all that I could think about...I liked the way that it seemed that Violet finding out about herself...like coming to terms was the theme I heard most in the book, she came to terms with her relationship with Jay and her gift. I can't wait for the next one.

This book is without a doubt one of my favorites. So many aspects of it were so good and even a little different than what the YA grain usually produces. Some of the major differences I spotted were
1. Violet has always known about her "gift". She doesn't discover it and take up half the book with her drama.
2. Neither of her parents is dead.
3. Her parents, uncle, and best friend *ahem* also all know about it and are there to support her. Honestly this is so rare. Usually the parents are just worried and confused about their child's random behavior.
4. NO LOVE TRIANGLE. (yet)

It's the last thing that really bothers me and makes me wonder whether I should continue on with the series. I always get nervous when a book is this good because I really want the other books to be as good *cough, cough, Maze Runner* and Jay and Violet are DEFINITELY good. VERY good. So yeah, I think I'll continue on with the series but if it goes downhill I can always pretend I never read the other books and that this one stands alone. Honestly, I might.
