[audiobook] After seeing the Elvis movie, of course I was intrigued to learn more about Elvis’ life, and Priscilla is the perfect source. An intimate look with candid moments, from both the romanticism and dark corners of their life.
I recommend listening to the audiobook if only for the little giggles.
My rating is for Priscilla’s charming, honest, and reflective writing. But 0 stars go out to Elvis for his manipulative, controlling, and egocentric behavior.
Couldn’t finish it. I can sum up the first half in one sentence. Elvis was a self centered manipulative douchebag.
Maybe this is a case of the audiobook being worse than the written copy. After two or three hours of her flippantly recounting incidents of emotional and physical abuse punctuated by little giggles, I quit. I don’t have the emotional energy for someone who tries to play off manipulation as not a big deal. It is a big deal. Whether she is trying to preserve his memory for his fans or her memories for herself, it makes her sound insincere.

0 stars for Elvis as a man and a person, but 4 stars for the book itself. I was so sick of him by the end, and it was sad to read the story of their relationship through Priscilla’s lens of denial. She deserved so much more.
This book was so shocking. It almost read like a cult memoir. I would be interested to read about Priscilla’s experiences since this book was published in 1985. She’s such an interesting person who has been through so much.
It is absolutely wild to me that Pricilla wrote this book thinking it was a love story.
I grew up in awe of Elvis, but had very little insight into his personal life. I would listen to him on the radio every Sunday during the “Elvis Hour” where the oldies station would play nothing but Elvis. My dad had a few records. He was the king of rock and roll and no one disputed that when I was growing up even though he was long dead before I was even born. This book came out when I was one.
That being said, hearing things from Pricilla’s side is very eye-opening to the kind of person Elvis really was. To me, he seems to be an abusive narcissist. He started grooming Pricilla when she was only 14 in Germany and it only got worse from there. Controlling, manipulative, and abusive behaviors only got worse and made me cringe. The audiobook is narrated by her and the little laughs she throws in sound fake. I cringed at parts where she talks about his abusive behavior adoringly.
Overall, this was a difficult read for me. My heart breaks for her and everything he put her through. I will definitely never look at Elvis the same way again.

It breaks my heart that Priscilla never saw herself as what she truly was — a victim charmed by a celebrity.
