When Michael Ende called this The Neverending Story, that wasn't a joke; it was a threat.

Loved the first half, this reminded me of Narnia and Inkheart. I really enjoyed Atreyu's part of the story. Falkor was my favourite and I liked the interaction with Bastian on the other side of the book.

After that Bastian became an ass and I felt like I didn't really know where the plot was going after the war with Xiyade or whatever her name was. It all felt kinda confusing in an Alice in Wonderland way after that; Bastian was wandering around in his amnesia and I just wanted Atreyu to come back.

And then the last few pages were sweet so I'm conflicted and a little bummed because I wanted to love the whole thing.

I also felt like I missed some kind of important symbolism towards the end with the weird Water of Life and Dame Eloya and the forgetting of himself thing. Or maybe I am being an overanalyzing adult and not enjoying it with my childish side enough.

EDIT: After reading online a bit more and trying to understand it better, I realize I was right, there was a lot of symbolism I didn't quite grasp right away. I appreciate the book better now! But I still would have liked a bit more of Atreyu towards the end :)
If anyone was a little confused read this: http://dreampunk.me/blog/the-neverending-story-chapters-23-26/

Que historia tan linda y llena de enseñanzas, no pensé que me iba a gustar tanto.

4.75/5
Format: audiobook
I grew up watching the Neverending Story movie with my Mom. It was always a whimsicle and rather teary-eyed experience.
Wait until you read the book! The movie really only covers the first 3rd of the book, as the whole story would probably take 8 hours of movie time to flesh out well. I fell further in love with "Fantastica," Atreyu, Falkor, The Child-like Empress, Bastian, and the rest of the Fantasticans. It was wonderful to cry along with our characters. I was often speachless at the absolute sadness and lack of hope, by the heroes journeys we follow, and how Fantastica itself feels like a vastly unstable warm hug at times, and a terrifying ordeal at others.
The audiobook narrator, Gerard Doyle, did an amazing job bringing the world and characters to life. I'd love to listen to more books read by him.
By having the phrase, "but that's a different story, and shall be told at another time." After our MCs have to travel away from a side character really made the world feel never-ending. This was so, so beautifully done.

A perfect story about reading, friendship and youth

2nd read: I read it to my son and now I saw all the mythodological elements in here. So much depth, really a book for a lonely island. At the same time a bit more fidelity would have done the book good
