What a cliffhanger to end on! Excited for the last book in the series.

this was boring. not even the family hijinks could save it.

archer & mac didn't really have chemistry.

the author confused thai forms of address with chinese ones (like i get that you're trying to branch out but at least do your research first).

the watch spin-off seems interesting.

so refreshing to see a mulvaney and his significant other act like actual grown-ups for the most part lol

READ: 10/24/24

BEFORE YOU READ: The author doesn't provide detailed enough tw/cw so here we go: racism (by bad guys), abuse of undocumented immigrants (includes rape and enslavement), child abuse (including sexual abuse), religious extremism, murder (of bad guys on page), torture (also of bad guys), and explicit sex with undernegotiated kinks (including: dominance/submission, and 'no means yes' dubious consent)

This book laughed at me for ever thinking Psycho was as unrealistic as this series would ever get.
SpoilerWe begin this book with the sudden plot reveal that Thomas and Archer are working on a secret project with the US government to have a school of psychopath assassins.

It's just a step too far for my suspension of disbelief. Like, I can't take that seriously. It's just silly. Like, having finished the book I have made my peace with this plotline, but it's so out of left field, and I have to be so honest about this.

SpoilerOn a deeper level, I really dislike it as a narrative choice. The premise of the series is that Thomas is doing this insane, unethical rasing of children because he believes that he can right wrongs in this world. He uses his kids as weapons to fix the world, because there's no better way. The system is corrupt, and the Mulvaneys can make better judgements as an independent group of murderers than say, the US justice system which will always exist to defend the status quo.

But now we're working with the government? I just don't like it as a direction for the series. :/

Okay, that aside, our romantic set up is Archer and Mac have been in a casual sexual relationship for years, but neither has admitted to deeper feelings yet. Not my favorite set up, but certainly the most normal of set ups so far. Their romance went really fast for my tastes, and I didn't think that James did a good job of making me feel their history. Felt like a cop out that their romance happed half off screen.

SpoilerThe case of who is trying to kill Mac is what the series usually does. Not my favorite case as it's just awful to read about as a second gen Mexican. The best moment of the case itself was Noah getting to be active in the plot, ah he was fantastic and I'm always glad to see him shine.

Generally, once again, Noah is mvp. Not only for the recon, but also the love advice for Archer scene was so funny. Noah also provided much needed stakes for Archer's lie. (My only complaint on that was that Noah forgave Thomas in the same book. I would have liked more anger at Thomas, but that's been the case with this series for me.) He also got another dog. <3

Archer as a character didn't feel as solidly fleshed out as his brothers. Really sad about this. Mac is a stronger love interest, even if it's almost because he's so normal and well adjusted. He has issues, but he's more like Jericho than say, Zane.

But yeah, I'm glad I didn't skip it. That ending was so exciting, my expectations for the last book is sky high.

From his appearances in the previous books, I wasn't too interested in Archer's character, and I wasn't sure what to expect from his book- which I suppose was the point. While I enjoyed the look behind the curtain at the wider puzzle going on outside of the Mulvaney clan, Archer and Mac fell a little flat for me. Something about Mac having a famous twin brother was strange.

Overall, this was another fun adventure with the Mulvaney murder clan, and it was a joy as always to have all of the previous characters interacting.

first half almost lost me not gonna lie but the last half was significantly better and fixed most of the issues i had with this specific story

-Fuck buddies to husbands
-Woke up married
