An email between a former pupil & a maths teacher, retelling the story of how a boring life full of grief turned around, in a bizarely magical way. Grace is 72, recently widowed, & forever mourning her son, who tragically died as a child. A woman she met years ago, only once, has recently died & somewhat unexpectedly left Grace her house in Ibiza; a place of more than just sunshine. Whilst trying to work out what happened to friend, mathematical, methodical Grace uncovers magic & mystery that challenges her entire belief & understanding of the world, bringing vibrancy back into her life. It’s surprising to me, because I’ve loved everything else Matt Haig has written, but this book just fell completely flat to me. There were some pretty moving sentences, that made me stop, feel & think, although I think being familiar with the authors own personal struggles helped. I honestly found myself quite bored through large parts of this book, or just not invested enough. I’m all for magical realism, fantasy etc, & I simply can’t put my finger on why specifically I didn’t like this, but, I just didn’t.

3.5 stars, rounded up. The plot was good, but it did seem to drag for the second half. Great book for discussion, though. Brings up a lot of thought-provoking questions about science, human connection, and spirituality. So for that reason, I really enjoyed it.
