Couldn't get past the exposition and the dialogue
This is one of those books that I wish the author would go back and re-write. With his hard-won skills, I like to imagine how much better Mr Sanderson would craft this story today than so early in his career.
Musicians and movement artists are constantly upgrading old material, so why not authors too?

White Sand has a unique world within the cosmere even by Sandersons standards, and I believe that is this Novellas' strongest point. The magic system seems interesting enough, but we dont get enough time with the system to see any of the nuisances that make these systems interesting. On top of that, the main character and plot are both more basic than what I've come to expect.
This review is based solely on the excerpt included in Arcanum Unbounded, since I’ve been trying (and failing) to get my hands on the graphic novels for months—some are going for over $100, and I’m just not about to drop that much on a graphic novel, no matter how curious I am. That said, the bits of artwork I have seen are genuinely beautiful and make me wish the series were more accessible.
I really appreciated the shift from Sanderson’s usual ultra-powerful protagonists to someone like Kenton—who has barely any magic at all, but more grit and determination than most of his peers combined. The story had its moments, but it didn’t quite hook me the way his other works have. Still, as a piece of the larger Cosmere puzzle, it was an intriguing peek into a lesser-known corner of the universe.

My 2nd or 3rd favorite Sanderson book. It’s rough around the edges, sure, and some of the prose is clunky (maladroitly is back, and in full force). But I genuinely love this book. For those who happen to click on this without knowing what it is, this version (I’m pretty sure) is White Sand Prose, written sometime after Dragonsteel Prime and Elantris. It’s a combination of Sanderson’s 1st and 3rd books, White Sand and Lord Mastrell. And it’s pretty brilliant. You can get it by signing up for Sanderson’s newsletter (at least that’s how I got it in 2024. It may not be that way now).
And this book may not be for you. It’s a pretty different concept for Sanderson’s style, but that’s part of why I love it. Give it a shot, if you want.

Another novel from Cosmere that I really appreciate for the world building and multitude of amazing characters! For a bit of the time I thought there was a lot of resemblance to Dune (with the sands, deep sands, and Sand Lord, not to menton sand creatures), but soon it took off as it's own. Still I think Sanderson could have been inspires by the world of Arrakis.
I have now officially finished all that there is to read in Cosmere!
