This may be the first Klune book I'm ditching not even half read, but I'm finding it tough to get through. I had such hopes for this series, but it sinks beneath several cliches that belong in fan fiction, not books I actually pay to read.
First, the likable hero. Newsflash- there is nothing less likable than the person everyone loves, or can't resist. Too much of this book reads like a love-fest for Sam, who never actually takes responsibility for the harm he does, making him a bit of a psychopath.

It's a problem when I agree with protesters and angry mobs that the supposed hero of the book is the problem. The one great thing I thought that Klune did last book was not make Justin out to be the villain. It's too easy to justify doing a really unforgivable thing by making the person you're doing it to the bad guy, whatever. But instead the behavior of Sam and Ryan, and everyone else there, just feels abusive in this book because his hurt feelings are thrown in like a joke. And there's a line I just read about how Justin is learning to be kind, which made me throw up a bit because it's reading more and more like a justification of Ryan's actions when there isn't really a justification. It's not that Sam and Ryan are bad people because they hurt Justin- good people do hurtful things- but rather the idea that they go on hurting him and we are supposed to find it funny that bothers me.Spoiler

way too much of a Harry Potter ripoff. He is a wizard with a destiny his mentor his from him at 11, the prophecy? Ugh. The first book was such a welcome breath of fresh air that even despite my least favorite trope of love triangles I loved it and was looking forward to the sequel. Now I want my money back.Spoiler
