This was a brilliant follow-up to The Lightning-struck Heart. I live how the series and world are expanding and the addition of new characters is wonderful. Zero is officially the bestest ever.

“I meant it, Sam. Every word. It's always been you for me. I loved you even before I knew what it meant.”
A Destiny of Dragons is the second book in Tales from Verania. It’s been a year since Wizard apprentice Sam rescued the prince, retrieved a dragon, and got the man of his dreams Knight Commander Ryan. He is perfectly happy until he discovers that he is the subject of a centuries old prophecy, kept secret from him by his mentors, where he must gather the five dragons of Verania to defeat a man of shadows who will doom the world. Plus, his gypsy grandmother comes calling to claim him for his destiny and brings with her Ruv, a man who is supposedly his true cornerstone.
This sequel brings the same humor and heart that The Lightning-Struck Heart delivered. However, it is not quite as laugh out loud funny as that book because it has a more serious story and darker themes. Sam must deal with his sense of betrayal and unwanted responsibility thrust upon him with his characteristic avoidance and tendency to hide behind humor. But never fear because his best friends the easygoing half-giant Tiggy, the sassy gay unicorn Gary, and the sexually aggressive dragon Kevin bring their lightheartedness, sass, and banter while also exploring more of their histories. And Ryan gets a chance to be fully himself here now that he had openly laid his claim on Sam and he isn’t afraid to show any other man (ehem Ruv) who Sam has chosen. I could have used a lot less of the Lady Tina DeSilva subplot. It was cute when it was a rivalry in the fanclub, but I just don’t like what it’s turned into.
Being a sequel, A Destiny of Dragons no longer feels as novel of a raunchy comedic fantasy, but still manages to bring the humor and charm even with a slightly more serious story.

"For my eighth-grade creative writing teacher who told me that my stories would never amount to anything.
Suck it. "
First of all, as someone who loves reading the dedication in the books, this one was gold. It just goes along perfectly with the novel itself, snarky and so TJ Klune. And also reminds of the fact that I hate how my kindle starts me past this page when I open a book so I have to scroll back. annoying!
Anyway, onto the book itself... This book, although snarky and sarcastic and awesome, was a little more serious. The tone is different. Dont worry there's still plenty of word vomit from Sam and Gary and Tiggy are still amazing.
"I forget how bitchy Knight Delicious Face can be sometimes,” Gary whispered to Tiggy. “Makes me want to lick his face.”
“We lick him later,” Tiggy said.
“Oooh,” Gary said. “Deal.”
Sam has a destiny no matter how much he doesn't want one. This is told to him by his long lost, possibly vindictive, grandmother. It's also reiterated by a talking constellation. You'll get it once you read it. I swear. As the title says Sam is in need of dragons, so him and his merry band of loveable crazies head off in search of just that.
It is hard to describe their journey without giving too much away. We find out who the evil is and some of the story behind it. I believe there is more to that story to come. There are secrets, so many secrets kept in this book. It seems like everyone knows something we don't.
We meet Zero, the emo dragon which was hilarious. Dear god is that what I get to look forward to when my kids are teens!? Learning about him was fun and one of my favorite parts of the book. A dragon who wants to make everything beautiful: just adorable.
" Your heart is an astonishing thing, Sam of Wilds. I’ve never heard one beat quite like it. "
We get little hints about what is to come from our star dragon. As always, he is vague which irritates not only Sam, but me. I want to know!!! I get the feeling he may be helpful later. However one thing he says made me super nervous
I swear to you TJ if you kill off knight delicious face without Sam being able to bring him back I will hunt you down. I swear it.
There are still 3 dragons left to round up at the end, and one evil villian to vanquish. 2 more books left. I can't wait to see how this all plays out.

Not as good as the first, but a good story, and good build to the next one.

Wow, this was a lot darker than the first book. Still really good though. And I can’t believe I’m saying this but I kind of miss all the pining…
