Within the first ten pages I was thinking I would drop this series after this entry in it. The humor is over-the-top and these books wallop you over the head with it. Persistently and unapologetically. Some moments were laugh out loud hilarious, but a lot of times I felt the interjections of tangential banter carried on for way too long.
But then the plot picked up, and I began to see traces of the same author who wrote A House in the Cerulean Sea, a book I absolutely loved, and I became invested enough to want to see the rest of the storyline plays out. Over the course of three more books apparently.
This series is probably going to take me a while to finish, because I have to be in the right mindset, knowing that these books are pure fluff and vibes. Sometimes fluff and vibes is exactly what I want, but I also need enough cooldown time before I'm ready to be immersed in the humor again.

Amazing as usual and the 🌶🌶🌶 amazing as usual (and definitely intense and yet appealing). I am still baffled how anyone can illicit so much laughter and then give you a heart punch to last a life time, but TJ Klune delivers. I'm definitely afraid to read book 3 that promises loss and suffering for our dear Sam but can't resist this perfect series and its solid and lovable characters.

I'm still a bit unsure what to think of this.
"A Destiny of Dragons" is extremely funny. I laughed out loud so many times, my roommate was worried about me because he thought I was crying. The characters are very lovable (I so want to be best friends with Zero!) and individual and even the plot is quite gripping.
But. At times (very often so) the humour gets too much. I found it really hard to get emotionally invested properly when I couldn't read three sentences without having ten innuendos thrown in my face. It made most of the conversations feel awkward and unrealistic. I know it's supposed to be fun and lighthearted, but for me it could get overwhelming. That probably was the reason as to why it took me ages to finish it.
What also annoyed me a bit is that there is only one woman in this whole book who plays a major role, everyone else is male. A female dragon (or any creature really) would've been so badass!
Along with that, I didn't like the almost toxic masculinity of Ryan, which is supposed to be "cute" but really it's wearing on me, especially since it's displayed every single time Ryan is mentioned.
Yeah, well... even after that review I'm still unsure but I think I'll keep reading the series - hopefully I'll find some plot buried under all these heaps of humour.

This might be the first book that I'll recommend to the audio instead of the physical book.
The book is great by itself, and TJ Klune always knows how to write humor, emotionally impactful narrative and three dimensional characters, but, but! I think I wouldn't have loved it as much if it wasn't for the audiobook.
Michael Lesley is such a talented narrator, He delivers every character with such a distinct voice that i forget Im listening to an audio book and i get completely immersed in the story. He imitates accents, he grunts and growls, there is an echo when the dragon speaks, there is so much attention to details, there are sound effects, the humor is delivered with delightful precision... I can't praise this enough, he might be one of my favorite narrators, up there with Stiven Fry and his rendition of Harry Potter.
I now feel like reading some books that were not on my TBR just becuse he narates them!
If you plen on reading this or even if you read it and plan a re-read i wholeheartedly recomend you try the audio book instead.

When I learned that this book would feature an alternate possible cornerstone, I feared the book would suffer from love-triangle-sequel syndrome, but I was relieved to find it delved deeper into emotional complexity than The Lightning Struck Heart, all while remaining a comedic adventure full of heart, loyalty, self discovery, and, as always, family.
