Reread 2021- I dont really agree with my past review definitely 5 stars. I loved meeting new characters and exploring more of the world of Verania.
Actual Rating; 4.35
All the talk abour sex did start to get a little annoying, some of it was exessive. Some was a litrle repetitive bur again these are small criticisms. Overall I loved it though I think I enjoyed the firsg one slightly more.

Like, even if you somehow ignore the silliness of the banter and the sex jokes - man, Klune can WRITE.

I really wanted to like this, since I had enjoyed the previous book, "The Lightning-Struck Heart", but this story just wasn't my cup of tea.
For me, the book itself could have been a lot shorter. A lot of discussions were repeated over and over again, and there wasn't much that actually happened. I would have enjoyed the banter, the humor and the adventure more if it would have been more concise.
Also, I quite liked the first book because it didn't take itself too seriously. It was funny, idiotic at times, a parody of itself, but completely and utterly refreshing. While it did the same things here, not taking itself seriously, I felt like the tone shifted drastically at times, becoming very serious, and then shifting back to jokes. In my opinion, I would have liked it to be one or the other, jesting or serious, but both at the same time didn't work for me.
There is also a new guy, Ruv, who has the potential to be Sam's cornerstone (aside from Ryan): but if he could play that big of a role in Sam's life, even if the latter doesn't want it, why don't they at least talk to each other? We had to wait 200 pages to get at least a conversation between the two of them, and it lasted all but a page and a half. I don't know why, but it didn't make any sense to me. The premise of the book made Ruv out to be an important new addition to the story, someone who could shake the foundation of Sam's world, which I found interesting. But they maybe talk three times during the whole book; I feel like Ruv hardly contributed anything at all to the story. Maybe this will change in the sequel, I don't know.
This being said, I don't believe I will be reading said sequel. I wanted to finish this book, and I did, but I don't think I can continue.
This doesn't mean that I don't respect TJ Klune as an author or his books. I have seen a lot of reviews stating that they absolutely love this book, and I'm glad for it. It's not because it wasn't my cup of tea, that others can't enjoy it.

i normally like klune's books but this one took me too much effort to finish it. It was good, but not as good as other series. There were too many jokes and that made me feel that the story did not advance. Im not sure if i will end this series. A bit disappointed tbh.

I keep typing and deleting my review for A Destiny of Dragons. It's difficult because I don't want to be rude or overly critical because I know people love this series and I know Klune worked hard on it, but I just don't think it's for me.
The book is funny but it's also really repetitive. An inside joke is something I enjoy between characters but after the tenth or twentieth repeat, it's not just repetitive it's annoying. Same with the flashbacks of text we've read only a hundred or so pages ago. I am convinced this book could be cut in half and the story would not change.
There's also the promise of action that just doesn't deliver for me. To be honest, Sam's life and adventures before the events of The Lightning-Struck Heart seem much more perilous and exciting compared to this adventure. There were so many moments in the story where I thought, "This is it. ___ is going to turn on them and they'll have to solve this new problem." But that never happened.
Maybe I am being too critical. I don't know. But these are my honest thoughts.

Spoiler
Scene with the sand mermaids aside (but even then it falls short with the "repeating what we already know" issue when Sam's friends repeat what just happened to him in detail like we didn't just spend several pages reading about it).Maybe I am being too critical. I don't know. But these are my honest thoughts.
