The structure of this novel is a bit challenging - it's written entirely in lists - and it's been getting quite a bit of hate in the reviews. I, however, thought it was brilliantly clever!
I will admit to finding it a bit difficult to "get into" to begin with, but after the first 100 or so pages (I know!) I was totally invested in the characters. Even though they were all flawed, they were mostly likable, and I cared about all of them.
I'm not sure I will be able to get the boys to see past the number of pages though...

I started off strong here really loving this story told in lists - a new idea! But then it just got so looooooong that I found myself skipping ahead and reading the list titles to get a sense of where the book was going.

4 Things About This Book (1 For Each of the Four Stars)

1. I picked it up because it's written in lists and interesting ways of presenting stories intrigue me.

2. It turns out lists are sometimes extremely efficient ways of getting across information to the reader. And sometimes the "lists" are just basically paragraphs of prose, so when some serious exposition or dialogue needs to happen that gets built in too.

3. I liked how the story didn't really tidy itself up. A neat and tidy ending wouldn't fit with the messiness the book explores.

4. There's a line on literally the last page that turns the list thing from a gimmick into something that totally makes sense. I basically said "oh!" out loud.

I've been into books with unusual formats lately and this was on the list of ones to read and I thought it sounded interesting. A novel told entirely in lists! How would that work?!

The answer? Not as well as I'd hoped. Sure it made sense as a cohesive story but it was so annoying. Some of the lists were simple: say a list of thirteen words that the protagonist had thought of during the day. Other times each number on the list was six or more paragraphs. It was odd and jarring and didn't make for a very pleasant reading experience. It was both super fast to read and yet felt like it was taking forever.

Overall I didn't really like Me Being Me very well.

oH Man... So disappointed...

I was really looking forward to reading this because I loved the idea of it being told through lists. But I realised that I could barely follow the story and it bored me on so many levels. When I started reading I was wondering why this book had 3.0 average. But now I understand. I did not like this book and I DNF'ed at about 532.

I don't really have that many thoughts because it didn't engage me at all, I couldn't relate to the story or the characters. The story was flat, the characters were flat. I went into this book with high expectations and I was severely disappointed. Sad thing is, I knew it had a crappy average and I thought I was going to like it despite myself. Goddamnit now I'm in a reading slump.

Darren is not having the greatest morning. He just found out that the reason why his parents are getting a divorce was because his father is gay. He can’t deal with a long car trip with his dad, so he ask the pretty goth girl for a ride to the bus station.

This was a beast of a book, it is over 600 pages. That being said I breezed through this book. The story is mainly told through Darren’s list, so some pages have a few words while other lists can take multiple pages.

Sadly the list story telling format was the most interesting part of the book. We basically spent a year with Darren throughout this book but I didn’t feel like anything happened to him. I found the supporting characters to be much more intriguing.

I wanted to learn more about his father who recently came out of the closet. Darren’s love interest was shipped to away to a different school. When we first met her, she was already mysterious and moody. I found them to be much more compelling. I wish we could have learned more about them.

I give this book a C.

I just didn’t feel that Darren grow enough over the 600 pages.
