Tahle kniha mě opravdu zaujala a mile překvapila. Je to skvělý mix španělského odnoží severské krimi a baskické mytologie.

MOJE RECENZE NA BLOGU

A lot of elements pushed me towards reading this book. First and foremost, my closest friend is Basque and he bought this for my birthday two years ago. At the time, in all honesty, I wasn’t sure if I would ever get around to reading The Invisible Guardian. Crime is not my favourite genre (or even one I favour at all) and a quick scan of the blurb didn’t do much to entice me.

Fast forward a year and I’m browsing Netflix where I see a film, The Invisible Guardian. It’s Spanish made, the lead actress is Basque. I’m intrigued. Two hours later the movie finished and I’m in love - and excited to see Netflix is committed to making the next two films in the series too. Now, I will admit, I forgot about the book sitting on my shelf and for some reason didn’t connect the dots.

Another year passes and the final film in the Batzan trilogy is released on Netflix. “I should really read the books...” I think to myself absently. Then it hits me. The first one is on my shelf, has been for two years. I text my friend. He can’t believe it’s happening after two years. I’m finally reading this book. And guess what? I loved it.

Amaia Salazar is a great heroine - strong, determined, good at what she does but also flawed, with a dark history and some accompanying moments of madness to match. I loved her and she is a wonderful creation. Her relationships with those around her - be it her husband, family, friends or colleagues are written richly and with varying delicate notes. The secondary protagonist is definitely the Basque country itself, a place with its own rich lore and history. I know a little of it’s traditions from my friend, but I learned even more whilst reading this.

The crime centring the novel is also compelling. Someone killing young girls, enacting a ritual each time, perfecting the art of murder so acutely that they’re almost impossible to find...it kept me guessing watching the film, and reading the book I really enjoyed all the additional detail and subtle clues Delores Redondo sets out to the reader.

If you’re not a fan of crime, I would still say try this - it is more than the equal sum of its parts. Great characters, interesting plot and fascinating history and lore of a place which is like no other.
