The story is amazing and the world building is even better. The way we get to see Thorfinn tries to avenge his father's death is something I've genuinely enjoyed.

I would definitely recommend this.

For fans of Robert Eggers' The Northman or the TV series, Vikings, Vinland Saga, is a high-caliber historical fiction manga that follows slightly similar plot threads to that of Eggers' Northman & the TV series, Vikings.

What's it about? Thorfinn was raised on the stories of the great Leif Ericson, who told tales of a land where slavery doesn’t exist...Vinland. Thorfinn dreamed of going to Vinland, but his dreams were shattered by a raid of Viking mercenaries. Now Thorfinn is being raised by the very Viking mercenaries who killed his parents, they are lead by Askeladd. Thorfinn is an excellent fighter, but he is still a boy. He constantly seeks to defeat Askeladd in a duel, but has yet to succeed. Thorfinn is sustained by dreams of somehow escaping his current situation and finding Vinland.

The manga is a cinematic journey, one that is captivating and reads quite quickly. It is actioned packed and full of tremendous detail and the drama! The drama of Thorfinn losing his father, and his constant dreaming and scheming to escape his situation makes for compelling reading.

For fans of Viking culture and lore, Shakespearean tragedy, and the aforementioned film and TV series.

Vikings!

An amazing adaption of the nordic culture and a great story about Vikings.

This is a historical fiction manga about bloodthirsty vikings, and one of the stronger anti-war stories I've experienced. Combine that with some excellent characters ranging from brilliant (Askeladd) to fun over-the-top crazies that still have a lot of depth (Thorkell), brutal action and a main character with huge emotional baggage, and you get a series of powerful and emotional moments and twists.

Although I barely acknowledge the manga I read THIS MANGA HAS TO BE RECOGNIZED!

I absolutely love this manga already just from reading the first book. I always loved reading about Vikings after reading Joe Abercrombie's Shattered Sea Series. For those that want to read more Vikings books, I highly recommend that trilogy! But other than that I'm glad that I gave this manga a chance. Especially since I've heard so much great reviews about it. I instantly cried in the end when we learn Thorfinn's past. If you're looking for a manga that will instantly grab you in the first book THIS IS THE ONE!!

I'm a sucker for an action story, but this one was done very well - full of physical prowess, honor, and the moral struggle between protecting people and ending precious life. Although there are some classical themes here that are easy to predict (so far) having them in the Viking context added a splash of originality.

Also I was surprised how much I enjoyed seeing the historical details of common life in Iceland. Sometimes exploring the backstory is an annoying interruption to the plot, but this time I think it really deepened the context of the world and the characters in a way that was valuable and enjoyable.

I'm looking forward to reading more!

I’m in love already! I highly recommend Vinland Saga to everyone 16+! It's not just for people interested in Norse mythology, it’s for everyone! It’s extremely beautiful and perfectly portrays what life was like for the people in this era. It's very realistic if you will, and even includes some historically accurate characters and depictions.
