I loved this book! It says I took two days to read it but really I only read for a couple hours one day and then started it again the next night when I had the time and finished the rest on one sitting. Funnily enough I was in a big slump when I read the first book and I adored it and it pulled me out of my slump. I’ve been in a slump for two months now and I got a new kindle that was hard on my eyes read I read right through this and my eyes adjusted. I love the characters in these books. They all shine in such unique ways! I now want all forms of this book!

JTownsend's writing really leveled up for this book!
I really in enjoyed the first book and gave it a 5/5 for it's characters, charm, and humor. It had the 2nd most strongest starts to a book, 2nd being Harry Potter. It was a fun read but some parts felt a bit slow (particularly introducing the hotel and it's inhabitants), and outside of the parts about Morrigan's and Squall's origins, overall I didn't have the 'got to read the next ch' drive like I've had with my other all time favorites. The trials were fun, A-tier/B-tier, but not S-tier.
Well, the 'got to read the next ch' drive was definitely there in the 2nd book. The 2nd book is her first time as a full-time author, and there's a significant increase in elegance in how she structured the story. better supporting characters, antagonists, locations, conflicts, mysteries; setups and payoffs.
Outside the overall writing quality, there were some particulars which I thought made the 2nd book more readable. We get to explore more of Nevermoor and the school rather than the hotel, which are way more fun and interesting. Also, in the first book, many of the supporting characters were adults, but now it's much more focused on her peers, which again is more fun to read.
The first ch was a bit slow for me, but things get fun in the 2nd ch, and keeps on getting better after that. It was around 1/3rd into the book I realized how much her writing evolved; S-tier.
I don't want to spoil anything, but if the series continues on the same path, it'll be one of the all time great epics, up there with Harry Potter and His Dark Materials.
And she's still a relatively young author; looking forward to the 3rd book and her growth in the craft.

Morrigan was as loveable as always in this book. Jupiter and Jack just became more endearing to me in this book. The found family in this is definitely strong and wholesome. Even Fenestra the magnificat is lol lovely to read. I liked the whole world of nevermoor more here. Its just very WUNDROUS. The tricksylane, and the parks and waterfall we discovered with Jupiter were fun. I really liked how Jupiter was very determined to show Morrigan that Wundersmith history wasn't all bad and that event hough he doesn't need proof, he knows Mog wants proof so he will find proof and HE DID FIND. Anyways I didn't know what was up with that turtle professor lying so much and making Mog feel like a monster. Also the dual personality of Dearborn and Mo-something was interesting and how one is scholar mistress of mundane arts and the other is of arcane arts. I also liked the sort of Harry Potter esque feel that we get in this book because of how they get to school thought the secret train and doorways stuff. Also I thought the loyalty trial was interesting. Oh also I would like to know what "activate the safeguards" mean? It must be something very cruel like imprisoning her or uk somehow taking her powers way, cuz Jupiter seemed very furious when Baz suggested they do that. I love when Jupiter the easygoing and fun guy suddenly becomes harsh to defend Mog. His powers as Witness is clearly VEEERY interesting. Oh also I want to know how and where Cassie (the angel who isnt anyone's friend as said by Jupiter) disappeared. Also want to know what Angel Israfel meant when he said Mog that it would be bad if the wun society knew that he was in her debt(since she saved his life). Maybe it has something to do with him being one of the 9 safeguards? Or maybe his kind being in debt to someone is really BIG DEAL. Anyways when I said in the review of the first book that it would be a long time before I read the rest of the series, it was a lie. This books makes me want to read more middle grade fantasy.
This was definitely a setting-up-the-rest-of-the-series sort of book, but I still quite enjoyed it, perhaps slightly less than book 1. The creativity is freaking astonishing, though. Can't wait for book 3!
