This Is Not My Hat

Cute story. Makes me laugh every time I read it.

This book at first seems very simple. There are not many words. There are not super detailed and colorful illustrations. This all does not prevent This Is Not My Hat from being a modern classic. Klassen’s illustrations are enthralling. They make it seem like he’s showing a story that’s really taking place at the bottom of the ocean. The lesson of the story is simply that it is bad to steal. However the way it shows the consequences of stealing is both shocking and hilarious. This theme and result is similar across several Klassen books and I always find them funny. I recommend this book for children to work on their literacy but also for anyone who wants to see quality illustrations and read a quality story.

I guess it could be used to tell kids not to steal? I found I Want My Hat Back to be more funny,  even if the message wasn't as clear as this one.

Who does the hat REALLY belong to??

This book is amazing. I am a Jon Klassen fan. His books cause me to think and wonder. Beautiful illustrations, too.

Loved this book and the quirkiness of Klassen's humor; great inferences drawn from illustrations. A fun follow up to I Want My Hat Back.

me gustó la trilogía (va de morales cuestionables)

Not your happy-go-lucky picture book, this story teaches kids a lesson in a highly unusual way, implying drastic consequences for defying dangerous situations, trusting strangers, stealing, and holding an arrogant attitude about it. This is a tale that takes a twist at the end reminiscent of what one might read in a Grimm fairytale or Aesop's fable. Intriguing as it is to see what will happen to the arrogant little fish in the end, this is not a story I would enjoy explaining to young children. The implied ending is a tongue-in-cheek bit of macabre humor adults might enjoy, but not the method I would choose to teach children a lesson. As an optimist and fan of those more traditional happy-go-lucky stories that resolve conflict in a positive way, I was disappointed by this book.
