This Is Not My Hat

Jon Klassen

4.31 AVERAGE

This book shows how dramatic irony can work for even a very young audience and how contradictions between narration and images can be engaging rather than confusing for young readers. It is a straightforward story that kids can follow, but it puts the work of interpretation on them, which is one of the things that makes it so fun for them!

This is not my hat
Brief summary - A small fish steals a big fish’s hat and tries to justify his thievery
Annotation The small fish steals a hat and tries to hid from the big fish, but to no avail, since he is found.
Age appropriateness 3-6 years
Connection to six early literacy skills
Narrative Skills - This is strong since the story sends us following the thief and waiting to see if he gets away with it. Easily retold.
Opinion - I think that adults might enjoy this book as well as children. I am not sure if the message of stealing and justifying thievery is okay with me. Might be a good jumping off place to talk about honesty.

Age: K-2nd grade

A perfect example of an oblivious narrator that can't possibly predict the ending, although the readers/listeners certainly can. This type of narration is perfect for building a delightful experience around reading because children can develop pride in predicting the ending when the narrator certainly cannot.

Simple illustrations put extreme focus on the details like the tiny hat, the building suspense, and the Big Fish's pursuant, slitted eyes.

Better than I Want My Hat Back? Surprisingly, yes!

I didn't realize this was a children's book when I added it to my "to read" list. It's literally 10 sentences. 😂

is it strange that I semi liked this book? the first book by Klassen featured a blatant act of cannibalism. my daughter asked me "what happened to the other animal?" i had to tell her the animal was eaten because the bear was mad. at least they don't show the big fish eating the little fish in this one. i still am amazed by this book.

For anyone who has ever worn a hat that didn't belong to them...

Oh no
Not again

A hilarious companion to I Want My Hat Back. #teamfish either way!
