I never reviewed this right when I read it, so this will be brief as it isn't quite fresh on my mind. Simply put, one of the best and most self-aware pieces of transgressive literature ever crafted. A thoughtful but sickening formal analysis of violence and fiction. Consistently and boldly confrontational towards both Cooper himself and those taking part in the work by reading it - what do we shape by taking in violence, sex, transgression, cruelty, what do we enable and change about ourselves, can we ever conceive of it until it's too late.
I have no idea why I'm so obsessed with these books

Genius absolute genius. Closer left us with so many complex lingering imgaes after its constant cycle of reconstruction and deconstruction of the image (Cooper loves to work within this constant cycle), and Frisk decides to hyper focus on one specific image, 1 large construction and deconstruction of image. That being the image of pure violence, how does this powerful image (Cooper understands the profound nature and power behind it) affect desire. Cooper never works in an area of judgement but rather in a constant circle of empathy and protection, his characters//beings//offspring of himself, have intense fantasies, depraved ideas, but he is always extremely empathetic, engaging with the circumstances around them that cause this. This leads into what the image of pure violence has been turned into. The commercialization of violence. Cooper reconciles his own fantasies and explores his own concious to discover why we shouldn't act out on these fantasies and where these fantasies come from. The image the novel constructs is that of a snuff image. It affects the readers perception of the entire novel, it is the foundation. Even when in the middle of the novel we realize the truth, the image of pure violence is still lingering in the readers mind. That is until the final chapter (titled infinity) deconstructs that image, revealing its true nature. Frisk constructs and reconstructs an image of violence to let the viewer explore desire fantasy, and the source of wanting to kill. Cooper doesn't buy the excuse of Killers being born that way, he views their external circumstances, and them with empathy. Really genius work, kinda baffled that the Cycle would go into this direction but I absolutely love it. Excited to continue!

"When I opened my eyes, Ferdinand and Jorg were scooping up parts of the kid in their hands and plopping them into plastic bags. The futon was ruined. I bought a new one. The floor's still blackish from where the kid's blood soaked into the wood. We'd demolished him to the extent that there was no sense of what he'd looked like in the pieces of him that were left. It was like we'd erased him. It's weird. None of us can remember his looks in any detail. When I try to picture him, I just go blind and my cock gets unbelievably hard."
oh wow. i try not to write reviews after finishing a book, but is there really any way to make my words clearer? this was sick. that is all.
