bibliobrandie's review against another edition
Throwing in the towel on this one, I am 1/3 of the way through and I just can't get into it. Someone wrote in a review, I feel like I am stuck at a party listening to a drunk guy go on and on about his grandfather. That sort of sums it up for me. I didn't like the way he never gave names to his grandfather either, it kept him too disconnected from me. And he was supposed to be on all these "adventures," but they were just boring stories. This was my first Michael Chabon, not sure if I should read something else because I really didn't even care for the writing.

A well written fictional memoir. Michael Chabon not only wrote an interesting book, he made me question all the way through if it was real or not. He even has footnotes to explain and provide "facts" to back up the story. I had to keep reminded myself it was fiction because it was more believable than some actual memoirs that I've read.

3.5 stars. Flawed, but interesting mash-up of fiction and memoir. It was a slog at the beginning, but eventually picked up and became fairly compelling, especially the scenes with his schizophrenic (maybe?) grandmother.

Moonglow is a fictional story in the style of a memoir. A Jewish boy prone to trouble grows up to be fascinated with rockets and the space program. The book deals with mental illness, memory, family relationships, the Holocaust, change and courage.

This was WONDERFUL. I don't always love everything Chabon writes, but I think this might be my favorite.
Such a fantastic mix of memoir, magical realism, unreliable narration, and subject matter. Told in a non-linear style that took me a bit to get used to.

As a big Charon fan, this not only didn't disappoint, but was yet another display of his talent. I loved the fictionalized memoir as a story telling vehicle. So many "family" stories that while jumping around were really brought together by Chabon.
