"The Waste Land" is the big attraction everyone comes to see in this collection. I greeted this seeming slim volume, never expecting pages stacked high with archaic namedrops, erudite references, and clumsy callbacks; I felt beleaguered by my reading of "The Waste Land," this performance of academic self-indulgence, if nothing else. So beset was I by Eliot's "fun," that I did not have any, as I ended my reading of the poem with no real clear idea of what I had read, and no desire to cover the material a second time.
I was moved however by my readings of other poems, such as "Whispers of Immortality," "The Love song of J. Alfred Prufrock," and especially "The Hollow Men," in which I read a great deal of meaning during the depression I experienced during my reading of this collection. Favorite lines:
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper

Hauntingly beautiful and bleak, soul-baring and -crushing. Modernist poetry at it's peak bleakness and tragic.

I’ve wanted to read The Wasteland ever since my A Level English teacher kept mentioning it when we were studying The Great Gatsby.
I must admit, not a lot of it has sunk it. I think it’s going to be one of those poems that I read over and over again until I get it. Also, reading it on holiday didn’t help. I find it hard to concentrate on poetry and All Inclusive bars are too distracting.
When I do get around to rereading and studying it a little more, I will post a second review, maybe some quotes.

two problems that can co-exist are 1. i'm too dumb for the waste land and 2. the waste land is insufferably elitist

This makes SO MUCH MORE sense if you listen to someone read it out, as a general rule.
Bit heavy on the classical allusions and the random languages (three cheers for google translate), but I actually really enjoyed it.

Prufrock is still my cowardly, lovable bud as always.

I enjoy his work though many times I feel as though I am not smart enough to understand his meanings.
