I just didn’t get it; no chapters, just one long stream of consciousness during which the reader is supposed to feel something for Joan. Parts of the story were interesting, particularly Joan’s feeling of being other, her sense of never really feeling home anywhere but at work, the beginning of Covid. I have read a lot of great reviews but this one wasn’t for me. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.

3.5 stars. I couldn’t tell if Joan was supposed to have Asperger’s because everyone around her didn’t seem to notice her strange behavior. I did like the book, especially being a doctor at the beginning of a pandemic.

I think it’s about family bonds and how individuals show love. Not much happens but everything happens. In my book reviews, I keep writing that such-and-such book is “about life,” and that applies here, too.

I really enjoyed the first-person narration of Joan, particularly her dry humour and blunt observations. Overall I found the book’s exploration of familial relationships, the concept of home, and social expectations to be thought-provoking.
