I liked this...okay. All I knew going in was what Annie B Jones said on her podcast--an NYC ICU doctor who is an American of Chinese descent, spanning late 2019 into 2020. In my mind I imagined it to have a similar feel to The Morning Show, but it was not that. This is more of a reflection on home, roots, family, a person's place in the world, and confronting expectations from others versus forging one's own path.

⭐️⭐️⭐️
I started this one as it was described as a firsthand account of an ICU doctor in New York in late 2019/early 2020 as the COVID pandemic is just beginning. It was, in fact, the story of a woman born to Chinese immigrants in America, her struggle to be perceived & feel like an Amerjcan, the racial injustice she experiences & touches on the pandemic in the last 15 pages of the book. While interesting in some ways, it wasn’t at all why I read the book & I didn’t particularly connect with the rambling, disconnected nature of the mixed first hand/retrospective style of writing. It was a lot of words with not enough point, a bland plot & it ultimately felt like you entered the story in the middle & it ended right when the interesting stuff was getting started.

Engrossing but felt like I missed the point at the end. Also felt a bit like Joan was a neurotypical’s impression of an autistic person?

A fun book about a quirky doctor and her immigrant family. I loved Joan’s way of looking at the world, but didn’t like how abruptly the book seemed to end.
