Great book! I absolutely love Wang's dark sense of humor and science nerdiness. This book was a light fun read, about family and the immigrant experience.

I must be honest. I’m a doctor. I watched people die from COVID in ICUs. I called parents, wives, children in the middle of the night to inform them of deaths they weren’t present for.
I was not looking forward to “pandemic literature.” However, this novel was phenomenal and a necessity. Maybe it won’t be decorated with a bunch of plastered on award stickers by the end of the year (it should!) but in 50 years, when folks look back, this work of fiction will do what it’s meant to: endure, provide a glimpse into a moment, and perpetuate truth. Literature does a great job doing all that at once, and Wang’s work of art here is the among the best of it.

picked up at a used book store bc I’m simply a slut for contemporary chinese literary fiction, NOT realizing it was a covid book (not usually my fav) … but ended up loving wang’s writing style and loved joan as a character! won’t disagree that it ended rather abruptly, but like… we know what happens in the grand scheme of the world…. quick read, really enjoyed it far more than I expected to!

I really enjoyed this book. It starts off pretty slow and fairly dry, but I ended up enjoying it. I’m really glad I pushed through the beginning because I enjoyed the payoff.
