I liked this continuation of the Red Rising saga. I found the cast of characters hard to keep up with sometimes but there were helpful recalls throughout the book. I liked the 10-year time jump and seeing how complex the world and government was after the rebellion and wars. Can’t wait for the next book.

Voyeuristic and puerile. This is basically suffering porn.

The only three plot elements are: 1. Everything gets worse; 2. I can't believe they killed that character; and 3. The hero "saves the day" via deus ex machina (even though pretty much everybody is dead.)

Iron Gold starts with a time jump of about 10 years and follows three new characters, in addition to Darrow: Lyria, Ephraim, and Lysander.

The new POVs added so much in terms of seeing how everything changed after the events of the original trilogy. While we are used to only seeing things from Darrow’s POV, the new characters added nuance and allowed the reader to really the see the cracks in the new world that has been created. This was an incredibly realistic look into the real problems that any society could face following a rebellion and government change.

It took me a minute to get into the new POVs, but I think that is true of reading any new POV. Although, I loved Lyria’s POV and what she added to the story from the start. Ephraim and Lysander are not my favorite people and that is a compliment to Pierce Brown’s writing because I really hate Lysander especially. He is a privileged, whiny baby and I would love nothing more than to see him get his ass handed to him 🙂 I also don’t like Ephraim but he did get a little redemption there at the end. Still don’t like him though. As for Darrow, I am going to need him to instill some confidence in me in this next book because I am worried for him (what’s new, honestly?)

This book felt like the building block to start the second Red Rising series off. I can tell it is going to go somewhere big and Pierce Brown will be right back to giving me panic attacks and heartburn in the next book.

Truly, no one is doing it like Pierce Brown.
As always, hail reaper.
