I'm usually not a huge fan or romance genre stories - but this one resonated with me because of the setting and circumstances. I enjoyed the fast-paced development of the story, the characters, the relationships, and did I mention the setting?! It takes place in a small town in Michigan (Saugatuck) at a family-owned cottage that has been in the family for generations. So fun to read!

This was a delightful read—perfect for summer. Light, engaging, lovable characters, happy endings. The characters and events were realistic with just a hint of magic. Found this book in a Little Free Library, and it was definitely a win.

The book description seemed like this would be a sure win for me, however, I found the writing style was so stunted and amateurish. So much of the story hinged on cultural references I am too young (I'm approaching 50!), or too uncool, to get.

I enjoyed this sweet summer read of Adie Lou and her reinvention of herself. When her marriage crumbles into divorce, and Adie Lou is faced with selling her summer cottage with all its memories, she can't do it. So, instead, she plans to open a B&B and change her life.
This is a sweet story of understanding the importance of family and true friendship. It is about being kind to others and going the extra mile. It is about 14 rules which help to make life easier.
This novel was a delightful read! Things work out, with a happily ever after, and we need that sometimes!

The Summer Cottage by Viola Shipman
Love the idea of this book and was very close to doing something similiar when my mother passed away and left her estate to the children. I was 1 of the 5 but others wanted to sell the houses and land.
Adie Lou always wanted it to become a quilt retreat where others would go and spend time on the quiet island and learn how to quilt and be taught how to do so-you could live in the houses and be fed. Just sold last house a week ago.
Starts out with a woman who's going through a divorce, her son is going to her ex's school, tuitiion paid for and she's at lost ends with her job. Cashes in and heads back to the house on the lake where she grew up. She wants to turn int into a B&B but others in town have other ideas.
She needs to meet their standard of approval. She then seeks out help from the locals who can do the work she needs done to improve the house/rooms and the boat so she can take guests out on sundown cruises on the lake.
Love how she struggles and gets the jobs done! This would make an awesome movie as all the scenes are described in great details.
Love the rules of the cabin-priceless! Love hearing what her name means, history of fish cottage.
Love how her girlfriend and her son both help with the project-they are so resourceful.
Love hearing the story of the author's childhood, very similair to mine during the summer months. Brothers used to work on the ferry-not chain driven-you had to just throw a heavy rope over the piling, LOL
Like instructions on how to make a sand castle=so cool! Like this romantic love story intwined with the beach story. Notes from the author at the end.
Reader's guide is also enclosed.
Received this review copy from HARLEQUIN - Graydon House Books (U.S. & Canada) Graydon House Romance, Women's Fiction via Netgalley and this is my honest opinion.

I won this in a giveaway from Goodreads and my opinions are my own.

This novel makes me wish it was summer and I really want to go to Lake Michigan!

Adie Lou has inherited a summer cottage from her parents and she needs a new start, so why not renovate it and start an Inn? She's newly divorced with a son at college so she can do what she wants to. The cottage is located on a shore at Lake Michigan and has always been Adie Lou's summer paradise. Why not make it a permanent paradise?

I wish I had read it by the pool or at the beach because it's a typical summer read, instead I read it in the sofa in March

I remember seeing something about 50+ people finding love, and no, this is not a romance, but maybe she finds love (she totally does!). And it felt nice to see someone mature find love too.

Adie Lou has been through a divorce (her hubbie left her for a college student, that asshat!). And even though she has a well paid job, she wants more. She wants something new. She is tired of her jo, tired of seeing men pass her for promotions. She needs to find herself again.

So she decides to make her grandparents summer cottage into a b&b. Of course I at once thought of a Finnish one and was all how?!? But it seems this one has over 8 bedrooms, so that is bloody palace. But it will not be easy. She knows nothing about that kind of life. There is so much work to be done. She has doubts. She finds friends, and yes she does get a chance of some romance too.

I do confess that it is really cheesy sweet. Everything works out and there are quotes everywhere. I would brand it Hallmark feel good book. Make this a Hallmark movie and it would fit right in. And I liked that, the sweet, the hopeful tone of the book.

I have listened to Tanya Eby before, and I do like her voice. She also fitted very well for this role and this sort of story. It was enjoyable listening to her and I find her different voices well done,

When Adie Lou's world falls apart, she heads back to the one place that has been a constant comfort to her—her family's Creaky Cottage. When she decides to turn it into a bed-and-breakfast as a tribute to her parents and grandparents–her past–she remembers how important it is to follow and live the cottage rules.

I have absolutely just fallen in love with every one of Viola Shipman's stories. The author takes some ordinary item, such as in the case of his first book, a charm bracelet, and in this case, a summer cottage, and weaves a warm, beautiful tale, full of love and lots of wonderful memories. They always make me stop and think about the treasures that we have in our family and the stories that they could tell.

The Summer Cottage is the perfect book to read right now as we are coming up on beach-read season. You will become wrapped up in the lives of Adie Lou and Creaky Cottage, just like I did. I would so love to take a vacation there after reading this book.

The Summer Cottage by Viola Shipman (Wade Rouse) is a quick, low suspense read. The novel follows Adie Lou Kruger, a middle-aged woman navigating divorce and changing relationships, as she renovates her family's dilapidated cottage to turn it into a bed and breakfast.

Shipman (Rouse) is great at time and place, and The Summer Cottage definitely fits into the "cozy beach read" category. Shipman's novels are family connection-centered, and much like Christmas in Tinsel Tree Village, this one is full of ancillary midwestern characters that help the town, and the bed and breakfast, feel authentic.

While some of the family characters read a bit too perfect, and the family bonds a bit too uncomplicated to be realistic, the overall story is a great coming-of-(middle)-age story. Adie rediscovers herself as she navigates her new life, and her journey is heartwarming.
