adventurous challenging emotional mysterious sad tense slow-paced

This is the first book in the *Hollow Trilogy*. Each book must be read in order.

Abbey's best friend Kristen passed away. She hasn't been dealing with the loss very well. She sees this boy in the cemetery after Kristen's funeral. Said boy keeps reappearing. Abbey sometimes goes looking for him. Something about him is different but she doesn't understand what it is. How can one person change your entire world? I don't know how but he did.

I'm obsessed with how Caspian calls Abbey "Astrid". I absolutely love that Abbey has an amazing hobby that she wants to turn into a career. I feel awful that Abbey lost Kristen. Losing anyone is hard. When Abbey finds out about Kristen's betrayal I wanted to cry with her. It must be confusing for Abbey how not only did her best friend hide something but Caspian is too. I think it's nice that Abbey and Kristen had the cemetery to go to. Prom night broke my heart. Christmas was definitely not what Abbey expected. The ending made me a little upset. I do love this story but I wish it ended differently. Now on to *The Haunted*.

story didn't focus on Kristen and solving the mystery but Abbey and her annoying mother. the overview seemed like the book would be a good quick-read but was disappointed with the lack of depth in characters and the mystery of Kristen.

Liked the premise, but in the end there were to many plot elements and the author did justice to none of them. Sudden revelations at the end leave no ending with everything hanging with to many unanswered questions.

This was an ok book. But it did leave me a little curious and I have been told the books get better. The romance was way too slow for my liking and didn't care for it that much. But what did keep me invested was finding out all the secrets Abby's friend Kristen was hiding and why.
emotional mysterious
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: Yes

Weeks after her best friend went missing 16-year-old Abby has to come to terms with the fact that Kristen is dead. While visiting the cemetery, which she often used to do with Kristen, she meets mysterious, sexy Caspian and they quickly fall for each other.

I loved this book as a teenager and I'm so happy to see that at age 25 I still do. Sure, sometimes I wanted to yell at the protagonist, but teenage brains do work differently and I think that's reflected quite realistically and without just completely denying her any rational thinking.
Some might say that the middle part is rather streched out and doesn't have much of a plot, but working through grief and on top of that struggling with all the emotions that come with falling in love for the first time - that takes time!

For a BIG book (just over 500 pages) there isn't a ton of action going on. But I flew through this book in a day. I was so curious about what happened to Kristen and when Caspian would tell Abbey his secret (which, by the way should come as no surprise to the reader). It's a moody kind of book - good for a rainy day. I'll definitely read the sequel.

The cover of this book is very striking. I wanted it the first time I saw it. Then add to it the coolness that the author wrote the first draft by hand in 13 notebooks is pretty cool. However, the writing style is a little lacking. She jumped all over the place a few times, got ahead or behind herself, and dragged things out that didn't need to be. The story itself was awesome though! I wish she would have explained more in this book, but I guess that is what authors do to get you to buy the next one. Two things I had trouble with was the relationship Abbey had with her parents, and her trusting of Caspian right away. I could tell things were shady the first time he was introduced. It was cool how Abbey made perfumes, I wish she talked about that more. Overall it is a great story, but the writing could have been better. I will definitely be reading the next two books in the trilogy though. 3 1/2 out of 5 stars.
