The Hollow was nothing like I expected it to be and I’m disappointed. Not sure if I’ll read the second book in the novel.
I started this book because a friend suggested it to me, and because the previous book I was reading was boring me to death and I couldn't bare to continue it any longer. Hence I drove right into the story without any real idea of what I was getting myself into. The blurb revealed little and seeing as the genre was fantasy, I allowed myself to be excited.
How very wrong I was.
Straight off, the thing that caught my attention was the writing style. To put it nicely, it was simple to read and easy to understand. However in some parts the writing was shallow, for lack of a better word. It had me wondering, more times than once, if I was reading a fanfic or a novel. The writing style was almost too simple, and I thought I'd never say this because I love light reads just as much as any other books but oh well.
However even with that, I didn't let myself be thrown off and trudged on.
Now here's the thing. I am not a fan of slow paced books. Sure I love descriptions and details just as much as the next girl, but I need SOME plot. Some movement, some SOMETHING.
This book was a whooping 500 pages, so excuse me if I expected something to happen. Sure people will argue that it's a trilogy and I get that, this was more of a base for the future story. But for a book this long I don't think it was too much to expect some sort of story development.
But there was none. No character developments, no plot line, honestly apart from the last chapter, almost nothing happened at all.
Which brings me to the characters. Let me take the time to say how much I disliked Abby. She had all the characteristics to be a strong heroine, but she wasn't. She was extremely weak, and in some parts annoying. I was hoping that at least there would some sort of development for her, but she only grew more annoying as time passed. She didn't cry when her friend was found dead, but she broke down when a guy told her that he wanted them to take things slow...like?
This is a girl who found her dead friend's diary and instead of trying to find out how Kristine may have died, she instead decided to dwell in self pity on why Kristin had kept a secret from her...
I'm a sucker for fantasy, and ghost stories are right up there for my favorite things to read, and the plot line (the little of it that we saw in the last chapter) sounds interesting. But with this style of writing, these characters (an extremely weak heroine and a male lead who sounds like a knock off of Edward Cullen) I feel no pull to bring out the next books.

Wow, a fantastic read with a killer ending you don't expect

I loved the storyline for this book. The setting was located in a creepy cemetery surrounded by The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Yes, Headless Horseman and all.
I was saddened for Abbey when she lost her best friend. Her sadness puts her into a depression and the only person that could pull her out of it was Caspian. Ahh…Caspian, how dreemy..literally! I knew their relationship was doomed when he would only meet her in the cemetary. I was not a big fan of his at first, but the more that I read, the more I started to like him.
The cast of characters in this book were zany. From Nikolas and Katy, the undertakers at the cemetary, to Ben, a friend from school. They all have their little quirks and you find out all of your suspicions by the end of the book. Except for Ben, whom I still do not trust either!
It took me a while to actually get into this book. It started off kind of slow and there were some lulls, but I ended up finishing it. I can’t wait to start the next book in the trilogy, The Haunted.
"At that moment – in that small, concise, perfectly clear moment of time – I knew. It was that moment I fell in love with him. It actually caused me to stop, and time froze for just a second. But that feeling was so right, and so strong, that I knew I wasn’t wrong.”

I'll give it 3.5 stars :)
Well, I'll start saying that I liked the book, I really enjoyed reading it. At first, the story goes a little slow, and you keep having all these questions about a lot of things, in my case, the questions were basically about Caspian, and all of them, or at least almost all of them, get their answer just at the end. When I first read the summary, it got my attention almost immediately, I actually looked for the ePub version but couldn't find it, so I bought it. Now that I've read the book, I can't help but feel that my hopes for this one were a little too high. I'm not saying I didn't like the book, I did, I really did like it, it was good enough for me to keep reading until I was finished, I even want to get my hands on the second one as soon as possible, I want to know what's going to happen with Abbey and Caspian.
About the book:
Well, the story is about this girl, Abbey, who happens to be going through a tough time. Her best friend is dead and everyone seems to have an opinion on how she really died. Then, she meets this boy, Caspian. She first sees him in the cemetery, then at her best friends house. From the very beginning she finds herself telling him and trusting him with things she wouldn't normally tell any other person other than her best friend, but with him, she feels comfortable, even happy. They meet by the river and talk about everything and anything, her feelings for him growing with every smile he gives her, but there's something about him... He seems to want to be with her as much as she wants to be with him, but he keeps backing down and it makes her wonder if she is just getting it all wrong, until he completely shuts her down, because he thought that this way he would be able to keep Abbey from getting hurt by the secrets he keeps from her. But it doesn't last long. When she finds out the thing that he's being keeping from her, she just can't believe it, sending her to actually think she's gone absolutely mad.

The general gist of this book is there are two girls, Kristen and Abbey. Kristen died leaing Abbey with questions. She then meets a boy called Caspian and an elderly couple, Katie and Nikolas. Caspian doesn't like Nikolas and sometimes acts strangely. This is all centered around he town of Sleepy Hollow with quotes from Washington Irving's 'The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow' that intertwine with the the novel.
For a 500 page book, I don't think the overall suspense was built up as well as it could have been and felt a little rushed. There is also the unsolved question as to who D was and why Kristen wouldn't tell Abbey about Kristen's relationship with D.
On the whole it was a good read in my opinion.

A good read. But it could've been so much better. The story had a lot of potential which wasn't tapped. Hopefully the other 2 parts of this trilogy will compensate for that.
There'd been so much hype surrounding The Hollow that I could not wait to read this book. Of course, when I got a copy it took me forever to actually get around to reading it. However, now that I have read it, I absolutely loved it.
My favourite part of The Hollow is that Jessica Verday appealed to my sense of smell more than any other sense to describe surroundings and people. I believe myself to have a heightened sense of smell and I love that Jessica Verday appealed to my sense of smell with The Hollow.
When I read a book I tend to go for interesting story lines and awesome descriptions. I think that Jessica Verday definitely had both there. As far as characters go, I thought Abbey was a great character and I found her to be really relatable because her and I had a few things in common. Not everything, but enough to make me relate to her.
It didn't feel like I was reading 500 pages at all. I flew through The Hollow because it was so amazing and I just had to know more and more about what was going on. I loved reading every single part of it. Even the ending, there were a few things that weren't explained and I cannot wait to read the next book to learn more about some of these things. It's all very exciting.
I definitely think it's original and that is part of the reason I love it so much. I have the second book sitting on my shelf and I'm tempted to just pick it up and start reading through it right now because I absolutely love Jessica Verday's writing style and look forward to reading even more from her.
