I liked this just as much as I liked the movie, maybe liked the movie a little more. Protagonist pissed me off to no end, the writting is good, the art looks good.

The realest part of this book was that the girl from Tacoma was a freak.

I heard Adrian Tomine recently on Fresh Air talking about this book and I ended up really loving it. Just my kind of GN...interesting story, great, realistic characters with all sorts of human flaws and clean illustrations.

Just as Tomine succeeded in showing the truth in male/female relationships in the short stories of Summer Blonde, he does the same in Shortcomings. A three-chapter graphic novel with sharp, crisp illustrations -- great facial expressions - the eyes say it all - -- and well-written. The characters' internal and external conflicts are realistic and honest.
Just so good. Deep, believable and often infuriating characters. Perfect, evocative art.
