3.5--Not as emotionally resonant as other Tomine, but it's still quite an engaging story with an extremely unlikable protagonist. It's an interesting if brief journey, watching Ben move from slightly insufferable at the beginning of the story to complete ass by its end.

This was compelling enough, but the main character was too much of a sad sack for me to feel invested in the interrogation of race and stereotype that I think the author intended. Suffering from Sad Young Man Syndrome, this book was only so so.
