"¡Palabras! ¡Simples palabras!

The version as Wilde had intended. Of course it is even better than the one published.

The only excuse for making a useless thing is that one admires it intensely.
All art is quite useless.
All art is quite useless.

I was stuck between 3-4 stars for this review!
“The life that was to make his soul would mar his body”
What a whirlwind of a reading journey I had reading this book…
I constantly had the thought of “just because it’s a classic, is it still okay to judge by contemporary standards?” The book indeed had many a quote where I had to pause and reflect. It’s amazing reflection on intellectual ideologies and gender stereotypes were unmatched and still today are prevalent. But again I had a lot of problems with the characters and way it was written.
Especially the random time skips??? 2pm: we sat in the library talking and suddenly after one cigarette we were late to go to the 8pm opera ?? Maybe cigarettes just worked differently in this age. (Perhaps the passing of time being so obscure was another factor of his sanity passing?? Idk maybe I overlooked it a little)
Overall the book shows how intelligence as a human factor is the only thing not fleeting from us. Intelligence in all his forms has to become more desirable than beauty. Perhaps even more relevant in today’s society also. It makes you think.
But time again this book withstands modernity and is always an interesting read!!
