Thoroughly enjoyed this. Dirk Gently is a fantastic character. No idea what was going on. Loved it.

All over the place and highly entertaining, just as you'd expect from [a:Douglas Adams|4|Douglas Adams|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1189120061p2/4.jpg]. The voice talent in this BBC radio play version is fantastic.

“...words used carelessly, as if they did not matter in any serious way, often allowed other well-guarded truths to seep through.”

“There are always lots of people suddenly remembering people they haven’t thought about for ages, and always lots of people dying. In a population the size of, say, America, the law of averages means that this particular coincidence must happen at least ten times a day, but it is none the less spooky to anyone who experiences it.”

Just not as good as the first one. Parts were funny but parts were boring :/

My review for this was eaten by goodreads, but I'm pretty sure it said something along the lines of "I enjoyed this but was maybe not quite in the mood for it, so I gave it the benefit of the doubt by way of an additional star. Probably deserves a re-read eventually."

“Don't you understand that we need to be childish in order to understand? Only a child sees things with perfect clarity, because it hasn't developed all those filters which prevent us from seeing things that we don't expect to see.”
― Douglas Adams, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency
Douglas Adams had a wonderful gift for seeing the ridiculous and the true and telling us that they were the same thing. Every book he wrote has delights for the reader, and "Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul" has many such moments. The problems of Odin and Thor in the contemporary world provide a loose framework for Adams' ramshackle plot. Dirk Gently tries to find the connections between remarkable events and odd characters, while also searching for a cigarette that he swears he's not going to smoke.
Adams' writing influenced many other writers, including Neil Gaiman, who wrote his own book about gods coping in the real world.

I don't exactly know how to rate this because on the one hand it was entertaining... I read it quite quickly on a holiday since it was the perfect sized book to fit in my pocket. I also really like Douglas Adams books. I love his brand of chaotic sci-fi adventure about wacky characters.

... But on the other hand, this one just didn't quite click with me. I hadn't read the first Dirk Gently book (only watched the TV series), so perhaps it's just that I'm less familiar with it? Or perhaps it's just that it was a little too chaotic. A little too random. A little too quirky for quirky's sake? The story felt like it was going places then ended fairly abruptly within the last 6 chapters, and the 'big resolution' left me with more questions than answers.

Or maybe I'm the one that has changed since reading [b:The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy: A Trilogy in Five Parts|372299|The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy A Trilogy in Five Parts|Douglas Adams|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1676927879l/372299._SX50_.jpg|42028477] as a kid. What was excellent to me as a young reader now feels mildly annoying. So maybe it's just a me problem?

A friend asked what the book had to do with teacups, since there's a large tea set on the front cover, and having read the whole thing I have to say I have no idea. As far as I remember, nobody drinks tea (there's some coffee in one scene), and none of it takes place at tea time.

Overall, 2/5. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this one but I absolutely would recommend just about anything else Douglas Adams has written. I will go back and seek out the first Dirk Gently book just for closure's sake, and perhaps it'll prompt me to update this review when I have more *gestures vaguely* context. Perhaps.

When I started reading this I kept laughing out loud so often I got tired of my husband interrupting me with "what?" every 5 minutes so I gave up and we read it aloud to each other, switching off chapters. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard. Recommended.

The humor is just so random and from out of nowhere, it's great.
