The underlying, sinister tones to this children's fantasy story keeps the reader hooked. Whilst the reason Noah runs away becomes all too soon apparent, you'll still want to share in his bittersweet journey and discover its outcome.
This a coming of age story with a rather common sad twist. Personally, I felt like the author lost his way a bit in the beginning of the book. On the other hand, I enjoyed the retellings of popular tales intertwined with the main plot.
Is it a book for children? Or is it a fairytale for adults? I'm having a hard time deciding. It's certainly difficult to describe: creative, surreal, well-written and beautifully-crafted and with much more depth than is immediately visible. 4-and-a-bit stars.

I would have given this book two stars, because I didn't like it at all. The story was incoherent. I struggled with following the story without getting distracted.
I kept reading, I don't really know why but I most defintely DON'T regret it.
The last quarter or so is an explanation with makes you understand a lot of what this book is really about. It has been written to relate for any kind of ages. Children could easily understand the story and it would be a great activity to read with your child/sibling/cousin or so.
I didnt read any of Boyne's work but I am very curious to read more of him especially another genre of a more adult reading.

i did really enjoy this book but i think it is aimed at a slightly younger reading audience than i anticipated. this is exactly the type of book i used to seek out at 11 / 10 years old and so that part of me loved this book fully :) any short comings from my part were only due to the fact that this book is probably not aimed at my age range, which of course, has nothing to do with the actual contents of the book.
Opnieuw een boek dat waarschijnlijk niet voor iedereen is weggelegd (mijn zus vond het maar niets), maar ik heb ontzettend genoten van de absurde humor, de magische gebeurtenissen en de wonderbaarlijke personages. Een modern sprookje zoals ik ze graag heb.
