5 glowing stars for Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier.

This may be the best suspense novel I've ever read. I was on the edge of my seat the entire book and I just couldn't put it down once I started. Rebecca is considered to be a gothic romance and it was rather dark throughout. The setting in 1930's England and at the Estate of Manderley was excellent, and the characters were all very memorable. I also loved the ending of the novel. It ended with a cruel twist of fate that was so fitting to the story.

Rebecca is a wonderful novel. Recommended if you enjoy gothic/dark romance stories and/or suspense novels.

Exquisite prose that vines around you and pulls you into this wonderful, haunting and elaborate romantic thriller. There were so many gorgeous passages I had to re-read to enjoy and appreciate them. Just like the long and winding road up to Manderlay, this is a great novel with rich characters, a wonderfully paced narrative, and a story that will linger in your memory long after you finish the last page.

Closer to 3.5*

The pacing of this book S U C K E D.

However, the atmosphere, the discussion about identity, the overlooming just psychological exploration of Rebecca and what that means was interesting. But I personally didn’t need it to be 75% of the book. I get it, you’re comparing yourself to Rebecca on every page.

However the last 25-30% of this book really threw me for a LOOP and I was considering giving this 4 stars but idk I haven’t really found what I value in classics and I’m not sure Du Maurier is what I’m looking for when it comes to classics. This just felt unnecessary long especially considering it didn’t feel like the plot really picked up until the last chunk of the book.
