Cute. Really liked the artwork and some of the subtle ways Kumo moves across the page. Cover is misleading as the boy is only in two spreads. Weird that we got a glossary of Japanese words (the five cloud names—two of which were food which also felt strange!) but not extra info on clouds.

Loved the gorgeous artwork, but the story execution missed the mark for me even though I appreciate its message. A sweet and cute read nevertheless.

Kumo is a shy cloud that likes to be noticed but when the day she's assigned to cloud duty. To me, this is a beautiful metaphor for those who try to get out of their shell and live in the world and experiment with different things and journeys. There is beauty and love, fear but also imagination.
Beautiful illustrations with an elegant serene traditional style. My favorite page is the one in which the text makes an inverted triangle and fits well in the design of the page. A story told by a daydreamer who sees wonderful shapes in clouds.
Love the Japanese touch on the characters' names and that you can find more info on the pronunciation and meaning at the end of the book.

Thank you Netgalley and publisher for the chance to give my honest review.

I received a copy of Kumo: The Bashful Cloud by Kyo Maclear and illustrated by Nathalie Dion from Penguin Random House Canada in exchange for an honest review.

Kumo is a shy and bashful cloud who just wants to blend in and float in the skies unseen. But when the other clouds are out of service, Kumo is called to service. Although she runs into some trouble at first, with the help of those around the world, she begins to see all the good and wonderful that comes with being a cloud and being a part of the world. The illustrations in Kumo: The Bashful Cloud are ethereal and perfectly capture the wispy essence of the clouds in the sky. There is a sense of tranquility and serenity in this story that will invite daydreamers and introverts to be part of the world in the ways they please.

This was a beautiful picture book with gorgeous illustrations, that definitely has the potential to be a classic. We're following Kumo the bashful cloud, who one day has to take over the duties of some of the bigger clouds in the sky. Despite his hesitations and anxiety, Kumo finds new friends and a new confidence. I though this was a really nice message portrayed in a beautiful way and I'd definitely recommend this book for a wide range of readers.
