I wasn't looking for anything deep or long but something short, lighthearted and fun, as I have been busy and tired. As a Star Trek fan, this book got some giggles out of me here and there, not as many as I would have liked, but still, enough. It was a decent enough pick.

At the same time, it was also very flawed. It was impossible to ignore "x said"s. It was a bit too meta at times. Additionally, the book might not be ideal for people who aren't familiar with ST due to lack of setting and scene descriptions.

I love Scalzi so much.  I got a little confused at some points, but I think the characters were confused too so at least I was in good company.

Probably 2.5 stars. It was a fun, quick read, but overall it was just okay. Started off really funny and kind of lost steam in the middle (though I really enjoyed the three codas at the end; especially the first one, which might have been the funniest part of the book).

I rounded up a bit just because I can't deny what a *fun* read this was.

Andy Dahl's excitement about his new position on a starship gets tested when he discovers the weirdly high fatality record for crew. There is more than just bad luck at play and he's determined to figure it out before he and his new crewmates find themselves the next casualties.

Basically pokes fun at all the Star Trek tropes and as a Trekker myself, I enjoyed it. The first half is stronger than the last...the second twist that's uncovered and the mission the new band of crewmates takes on is a bit of a disappointment. I would have liked another more creative explanation, but again... I can't deny it was a fun, fast read.

I'm a bit ambivalent about this novel... The first 100 pages or so I was sure this was going to be a 5-star book. I really enjoyed the beginning, laughing out loud several times. But after that it went downhill. I didn't care about the characters (except, strangely, Kerensky -- possibly because I have a thing for characters whose names start with a K or L -- but even about him I'm mostly meh), and the codas -- to me -- felt like a completely pointless addition. If it had ended after chapter 23 or 24, I would've liked the ending much better.

But still, it was quite a fun read! I've been a Star Trek fan since I was a toddler. (Seriously, the first English word I learned was 'captain', thanks to my mum's Captain Kirk obsession.)

Thoroughly enjoyed this journey to Meta IV. The extra ding was for the timely arrival of the message.

Oh boo. This was all really good and silly and entertaining and fun until the end. CODA 1 and CODA 2, specifically.

They just made the book seem lame. It should have just ended with Chapter 24, which was perfect.
