This book was recommended to me by a friend who knew I am a fan of Star Trek as well as science fiction/fantasy books and would appreciate this particular book. It did not disappoint me in any way. It was delightful, went in a direction I didn't expect, and wrapped up in a beautiful way. This book may make it into my annual rotation of books or books to read between series.

I wish so much that it hadn't lost me in the last third because otherwise it was the perfect book for me.
Strange things happen on board of the starship Intrepid and Andrew Dahl, a new recruit, is eager to find out more...
The first half of the book was very funny with crazy adventures and a big "mysterie". Unfortunately the closer I came to the revelation, the more the book turned into a B-movie that has absolutely nothing to say. As a satire it works but the metafictional part left me cold. I have no problem with it, in the right hands it can be an interesting tool to question our expectations and views. Scalzi however doesn't manage it and I got the impression that he was either running out of ideas or that he just wanted to publish the book as quickly as possible.

Really enjoyed this. The premise was so interesting and fun. I was a little confused when the “main” story line ended, but I loved that they showed the aftermath of going through these bizarre events.
I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. Although Scalzi sometimes uses very simplistic dialogue flows (using the phrase "______ said" more than is probably necessary), the book started off strong and finished in an interesting way.

Didn’t give it much of a chance, but found the humor grating.
