An energetic, joyous illustration of how exhausting it is to have to exist in two cultures simultaneously.
Very relatable picture book. I love the illustrations depicting her going back and forth "in between".
Age: Preschool-Kindergarten
Shorter text presents a complex and relatable scenario that many children experience as first--or second--generation immigrants that are caught between their culture at home and American culture. The illustrations are detailed and invite off-text conversations between the reader and listener. Readers can truly feel the pull of two worlds as Shanti is illustrated walking back-and-forth between them, growing more and more tired.
A welcome discussion of immigration for the younger crowd.

Absolutely gorgeous and what a beyond magical message. The colors are so vibrant that you just want to jump into the page and experience the in between with Shanti, especially when it all becomes so overwhelming the neither and both!
The difficulty of a young Bengali immigrant in adapting to American culture, yet trying to fit in with her old home culture.
Backmatter talks of having two cultures as a superpower.

HOME IS IN BETWEEN is such a wonderful picture book! With a most endearing and expressive MC and a charming assortment of outfit changes throughout, HOME IS IN BETWEEN shines for its clever changing and story-shifting refrain, relatable cultural parallels, and immersive examples of cultural contrasts. It shines light on the exhaustive (and exhausting) challenge of immigrating, especially for kids, cultural code-switching, the importance of a welcoming community, how home can be more than one place, and how multi-culturalism is a gift. Very highly recommended!
A wonderful read for bicultural children/adults. You do not have to choose.
A delightful story about a young girl who must learn to walk between two cultures. The author frankly addresses the challenges as well as the benefits from having to be "in between." The illustrations are bright and colorful.
