I had seen the movie for this book after building model rockets in a Mod Tech class in middle school. I had fond memories of the movie, and had been meaning to read it for some time. Now that I've read it, I can say I enjoy both the book and the film adaptation. Hickam narrates a beautiful story of small-town boys trying to make it through adolescence and out of their town. Although I found Sonny somewhat selfish and apathetic at times, the story was still enjoyable. I would've liked to see more from other characters and other moments in the story that took a break from the rocket-building and science, but that's just me not typically liking nonfiction.

I bought this book while traveling through West Virginia; I thought it only appropriate. I had seen the movie first, and am partial to that rendition. However, it was very nice to learn more about the boys and their stories. Sonny Hickam is a very lovable character.

I laughed. I cried. I reached for the stars.

This was an 8th grade reading assignment. I have read it about every other year since then.

so amazing! i would recommend this to anyone who can read!

This book is what the movie October Sky was based off of.

Over all i really enjoyed this book! It was a cool way to learn about the town that was built just for a coal mine. It was really interesting to see how this small town functioned based of off the coal mine. I liked seeing the kids building rockets and progressively getting better/ more successful at building rockets. They start by failing miserably to designing almost perfect rockets. The kids end up winning the national science fair gold metal for their study of rockets.

I enjoyed reading this book because it was entertaining and inspirational. It gave lots of good detail and cool stories to keep the reader enticed. It was inspirational to see how these kids came from nothing.

This is the book that inspired the movie October Sky. It's worth reading even if you have seen the movie. It includes all of the elements of a good memoir--a coming of age story involving a kid who beats the odds, dynamic characters with complex familial relationships, and a bit of romance thrown in. I'm surprised to see that there are sequels, though, and am not interested in reading them.
