Recomendado hasta la saciedad por mi padre, no fue hasta que Stefita me dijo que era su libro favorito que le di una oportunidad.

Lo que en su núcleo es una historia familiar, descripción milimétrica de las excéntricas costumbres de la familia Del Valle/Trueba, se convierte en una reflexión sobre el odio intergeneracional, representada por las mentiras de los que nunca sufrieron y el perdón de los valientes.

En torno al último tercio del libro, las historias individuales contadas minuciosamente se entrelazan para darle sentido a la desazón de la guerra, la injusticia de la estratificación radical en la Latinoamérica del siglo XX y los amores imposibles, a pesar de las circustancias.

I had ignored this book for so long but it really surprised me. I enjoyed reading it though at the end it felt a bit repetitive. The female characters give this book life. However I felt like Allende was writing the same male character. The book is very sensuous and violent at the same time. I really enjoyed reading this book but the last 150 pages could have easily been scrapped off.
