A great story tainted by being confusingly written

Little Heaven Has a solid premise, atmosphere, and flow. It was a fun read, but I certainly won't be coming back to it. In my opinion, the author relies too heavily on gory descriptions and body horror, which didn't quite do it for me. It read like a slasher film, but with less suspense. If you're a fan of Stephen King, temper your expectations with Little Heaven.

It's Nick Cutter, you know what you're getting yourself into. Expect tense, violent, dark and macabre. I loved it!

This is the third book I’ve read by Nick Cutter and while the first book of his I read, The Troop, is likely still going to remain my favorite, this came much closer to that same level of entertainment than the last book of his that I read, The Deep.

While still delivering on things fans of Cutter have come to look for in his books such as eldritch horror, steady tempo, and gruesomely in-depth descriptions of the gory/graphic scenes, in my opinion this book also did better with its dialogue between the characters. While I don’t think he nailed the way people talked in the mid sixties and late eighties, I found the same level of enjoyment in some of the scenes where the main characters were simply interacting with each other as some of the more action-packed sections. The crew (as well as the artwork) reminds me of one of my Darkest Dungeon raid parties.

This book clearly shows where he drew various forms of inspiration, it is seeping with Stephen King’s writing style (not a bad thing for someone like me) and one of the main antagonists is basically a carbon copy of Jim Jones, just placed in a supernatural setting.

Overall very happy I finally read it, had fun throughout, and already have more work from the author shelved and ready to read.
