Interesting subject, but reads a little dry.
Susan Casey made this book all about her ridiculous and disrespectful behavior. what started as a beautiful description of scientific work ended in a blathering puddle of her proudly displaying her disregard for the sharks, the farallons, and the hard working scientists who put up with her.
I enjoyed this nonfiction travelogue/natural history book. I would recommend it for anyone who lives in San Francisco or is in awe of Great White Sharks. Most of the story's momentum is lost mid-way through. Those that are in it for the sharks may put it down, but those who like the human aspect to the story may continue. It is a rare view of nature dominating human beings.
Interesting combination of a description & history of the islands (Farallon), as well as the great white sharks (and other animals) that congregate there.
This story was amazing and engrossing, and I couldn't put this book down even though I was often annoyed at how the people depicted were behaving, especially in the second half. However I guess I'm not reviewing what they did, just how she wrote about it, and since the book was riveting, 5 stars. So fun to learn more about great white sharks and the Farallones.
This book does focus on sharks, but is really a biography of Susan Casey and her time spent on the Farallon Islands. The islands themselves are fascinating, as well as the sharks and characters that hang out here. The problem with this book is not in the substance but has much to do with the style it's written in. It continually feels like a magazine article ala "Outside" at it's worst and this is not a compliment. Each new male character is described as ungodly masculine and utterly, compellingly attractive while the females are young, pure and fresh sun goddesses who combine their incredible looks with an astronomical I.Q.. The story is a 4 star book - the writing a 2 - sooo 3 stars it is.
