This story started out pretty great for me, actually. And then at some point it just lost me. I'm so sad about that. The synopsis was so promising. The writing was actually quite lovely. I just didn't enjoy the story or characters very much.

Går meget langsomt frem, og jeg har svært ved rigtigt at komme ind i den. Meget dyster og negativ. Giver mig dårlige vibes og energi

3.5 rounded up.
I almost DNFed many times. For the first like half at least, I was baffled! I couldn't keep anything straight and felt very lost. However, I did start to get more interested after the first half. I still have some questions but I just decided to go with the idea that some things are better left unanswered. You just have to go with it. I am realizing I have a hard time understanding the more realistic fantasy. I'm great with pure fantasy but I find the realism mixed with fantasy to be a little too hard to follow for my taste. But I'm glad I continued it! It had a great ending and a nice conclusion.

I am a sucker for anything from Appalachia. Make it witchy, dark, and mysterious and now we’re talking. I really liked this novel. Weatherly was so relatable, and her power of talking the death out of the dying was very interesting. It reminded me of John Coffey from The Green Mile.

I think my favorite thing about the Appalachian setting is always the exceptionally rich mountain folklore, and In the Hour of Crows did not disappoint. The culture and superstition permeated every corner of this novel.

If you like witchy mysteries set in the mountain south, you’ll like this. I certainly did!

In the Hour of Crows by Dana Elmendorf is a story of seeking justice set in rural Appalachia with a decidedly gothic feel involving a death talker, a seer of the future, and a shape shifter. The story also have the very human elements of greed, vengeance, and power. The Appalachian setting is almost irrelevant other than being a small town where everyone knows everyone and everyone is connected to everyone. No major twists, but nevertheless an interesting, dark, gothic tale.
