This book is well-written. But it's pretty depressing and frustrating. The main character is hard to sympathize with, but he's real. His feelings are described perfectly, selfishly. He's deeply flawed. It wasn't difficult to stick with this book, but it felt like work - due to the depressing subject matter.
I initially rated this a four, but busted it down to a three based on my deep hatred for Richard.
Richard and Anne are married seven years. They have an adorable 5 year old daughter. Anne is an attorney. Richard is an artist. Anne is smart and gorgeous.
Richard, though, feels more like his wife’s roommate. Or brother. And, engages in a seven month long affair. Anne, of course, finds out and it launches she and Richard into a many month long separation and reunification.
I didn’t think this book would make it past my 100 page rule beside I hated Richard so much I couldn’t see straight. I hated his selfishness and his throwing over of Anne for this lesser creature.
But, I did find the depth of reflection into what it takes to maintain a long relationship and marriage to be interesting.

Picked this up from the library right before getting on a plane. It was entertaining enough to keep my attention and continue wanting to read it through the end. The art/political aspect was interesting as a subplot when the narrator was being too whiny. Good, quick read, but won't be rereading by any means.
The writing was so good in this book that I didn't want to rush it! Awesome first book by this author. I'll read anything she writes. Like Jodi Picoult with a sense of humor!
There was some redemption in how this book came together in the end, but for much of it I had a hard time relating to the main character. I thought he spent way too much time feeling sorry for himself after he screwed up and cheated on his wife.
Sadly, the author probably did capture something true about human nature, which is what made this book readable.

Week it never got better and it also felt like it was never ending. It wasn't light, it wasn't funny, it didn't impact me emotionally. All of the characters were impossibly good looking in Barbie-like ways. It was not a good book.
A man has a seven-year itch and has a fling with an unmarried woman, which understandably fractures his marriage.
It's hard to feel for this guy's plight. He has a smart, attractive wife, but after the excitement of early marriage and a child, things inevitably get stale. Maybe if they had been married twenty years, he would be a bit more likeable. It's hard to empathize with a selfish main character who doesn't understand life changes after a child.
Early 2000s Europe was an interesting setting to have the novel take place. I really enjoyed that insight, being anti-Bush myself.

Just loved this book. It is very funny and I also liked how the war in Iraq was tied into the story.
