In the quaint town of Chapel Croft, Jack Brooks takes on the role of the new Vicar, accompanied by her daughter Flo. Little do they know, Chapel Croft harbors a sinister past, with a tight-knit community guarding their own dark secrets.
Pun not intended, but this novel unfolds as a slow burn, gradually revealing its secrets and building in suspense. Initially, I struggled to understand the hype surrounding the book but quickly found myself drawn in.
While the story excels in atmospheric tension, I couldn't help but feel that character development fell slightly short. Moreover, the merging of thriller and horror elements may prove divisive among readers, as the lines between the two genres become blurred.
Despite these minor drawbacks, Chapel Croft's haunting atmosphere and gripping plot make for an engrossing read.

My mind is reeling. It’s going to be days before I fully process everything I just read and stop saying “what the fuck just happened” to myself over and over.

Please thriller writers—no more unreliable narrators. It’s played out and not fun anymore.
4.25 - I really liked this one. There was a lot going on and a quick pace. It blends supernatural and mystery well, and has a few good twists I didn’t see coming. C.J. Tudor is becoming an automatic buy for me.
This novel is not my usual genre, but the last books I read were quite "heavy" and I wanted something easier. I enjoyed the start of the ride, the beginning was a spooky page turner, everybody was suspicious, and something bad was just lurking around.
But the second half of the book fall apart for me. I had the same issue as with "A little life". There is a fine line between telling about the consequences of horrible individual trauma that can be literature and misery porn. I find the latter on the one hand distasteful and on the other hand underwhelming as it decreases the effectiveness of the story.

Spoiler
I mean what are the chances that both your best friend and your abusive husband gets murdered, your brother is a serial killer, you were raped by a priest aaand your daughter's first boyfriend also turns out to be a psychopath and murderer. Seriously. What are the chances for this.

As a reader, I enjoyed this novel's innumerable plot lines and genuine creepiness at times. As a photographer, I am horrified at the author's insistence, via one of our heroines, Flo, that black-and-white film can be loaded in red light rather than total darkness. Girl, what? No!
I almost gave up on this book a few times, and maybe I should've. It's trying to be so many things at once, failing at most of them. There are a too many storylines, and they are not woven together or resolved in any comprehensible or satisfying way. I kept waiting for things to tie together, but there weren't any clever revelations. I found most of the characters unrelatable, and the book was rife with weird, racist chacterizations.. and yeah, the disability in this book plays an eyebrow raising role - not in a good way. Very surprised by the high ratings for this disappointing book.
