The Burning Girls

I almost gave up on this book a few times, and maybe I should've. It's trying to be so many things at once, failing at most of them. There are a too many storylines, and they are not woven together or resolved in any comprehensible or satisfying way. I kept waiting for things to tie together, but there weren't any clever revelations. I found most of the characters unrelatable, and the book was rife with weird, racist chacterizations.. and yeah, the disability in this book plays an eyebrow raising role - not in a good way. Very surprised by the high ratings for this disappointing book.

Why have you all been keeping the greatness that is C.J. Tudor from me for so long? I loved every minute with this book. In fact, there were times I was mad at myself for reading so many pages in one night because I didn't want to get to the end.

Tudor's propulsive writing moves the book at a fast pace and her ability to keep all of the plot points she's brought together untangled is truly brilliant. There's a lot to love here, a creepy village, child ghosts, abandoned houses, time in the pub, teens in peril, buried secrets, women kicking butt. It felt like an old school British mystery updated with contemporary grit. I cannot wait to get my hands on her other books.

It's a really quick read that I got through in a day. Not my usual type of book, but I was tired of picking up books and then not finishing them, so I wanted something that didn't take a lot of work, and this fit the bill.

I put most of the mystery together before the book ended, even if
Spoilerthe supernatural element to the story is never really explained one way or another. It just is.
As for as endings go, put this more famous book
SpoilerTo Kill a Mockingbird
and this quintessential 90's movie

together, and there you go.

I want to spend more time with the main character. Maybe in a sequel?

4,5 ⭐️

Very good book, very interesting. I loved all the writting and the whole story.

I gave 4,5⭐️ and not 5⭐️, because at the end i kind of guessed what it’s happening, but i loved it. Maybe i am the problem because i read too many books of this kind.

I just found one new favorite author!! ❤️

This is a well written thriller... had the ending not relied on a narrator that knew more than she revealed. Ie: it's only a mystery because knowledge she has, she plays dumb about to the reader. For no reason other than to make it more suspenseful than it really is.
