I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book, aside from the brief description that came with the book. Basic premise is that a family goes on a cruise for a family celebration. I’m not a fan of cruises, so that was one strike. As I started to read the book, each of the family members kind of got on my nerves, almost as if they were exaggerated or caricatures. However, I quickly realized that this was what the story was about. Let’s put these people in a chaotic setting and see what comes from it. And perhaps we could see a bit of ourselves in at least one of the characters.
Whose family doesn’t have issues? This book takes a humorous view at this group who has not come together in years and doesn’t communicate well. Each member seems to have their own secret and doesn’t even think that anything will come out during this week spent at sea.
This is a great read for a vacation, and should be required if you’re traveling with family.
Thanks to Berkley Publishing Group for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my unbiased review.

3.5. I worry that this doesn't dissuade me from wanting to go on a cruise, lord if anything this might make me want to witness the madness even more. I think you might have to have at least a little bit of a history with soaps to fully appreciate the hot-mess that is this family, but even if you've never so much as seen a soap, just pop some popcorn and dive in. Also, props to the author for writing a character that I don't like, but for who I still feel pity! Also, I will forever be haunted by not actually knowing if you're supposed to blow out a baked Alaska flambe or let it burn itself out. HAUNTED I say.
2.5
I enjoyed most of this but I guess it seemed kind of scattered and just not quite.... all the way thought out?

Thank you to the publishing house for providing an advanced copy for review. All thoughts and opinions are my own!
I'm such a sucker for dysfunctional family stories and The Floating Feldmans is a fun one, if those are your cup of tea too!
The premise of this one is that Annette Feldman has decided that she is going to book a cruise for her entire family, in honor of her 70th birthday! It has been over a decade since they have all been together and getting them all on a boat has them trapped into oodles of family time together.
Each of these siblings has come on their boat with an extra set of baggage though (sorry, I can't resist a good pun!) and this luggage harbors a lot of old secrets and the terrible kinds of hurts that only a family member can seem to hold against you.
Some have grown up for the better, some have secrets that threaten their future, and the grandkids just might have a couple secrets of their own.
Told from alternating perspectives, this is over-the-top fun and had me laughing out loud at various points.
If you just want a fun escape, add this one to your beach bag. I'm recommending this one for fans of, This is Where I Leave You.

I received this book for free in a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest review
I was eager to read this book after finishing a Nancy Drew mystery that was set on a cruise ship. I hadn't realized how much fun hospitality-themed books could be until then. I read the prologue of Floating Feldmans and immediately knew it wasn't for me. There were too many characters and it chose to reference a scene further in the book that would make no sense to the reader now. I did like the vocabulary and the descriptions, to a point. There was an information overload blasted at me like a ship's foghorn and I was overwhelmed. The second chapter fell into the same problem with the author describing too much detail what was in the main character's shopping cart and everything she loves to do at Sam's Club. I knew that was what the book would be like and I prefer a "less is more" approach. Thank you for this opportunity and I'm sure I would have enjoyed myself more if the character list and detail extravaganza were pared down to a moderate degree. Bon voyage to those who will hopefully enjoy it more than I!

Thank YOU Berkley Pub for sending me The Floating Feldmans to review! This was a summer read I had to get my hands on, and I’m glad I did!
The Floating Feldmans is a summer read that dives into the lives of a family that goes on a cruise together. The reader first jumps forward in the timeline to the pique of CHAOS the Feldman family is in on their Caribbean cruise. There’s physical injuries and emotional wreckage so horrendous that the cruise director finds himself asking, how did we possibly get to this spot?
And from there, Elyssa Friedland takes the reader on this journey of a once stable family sinking and drifting apart, wrecking themselves, and then learning to rebuild and anchor their relationships with one another... With lots of sea puns and cruise ship antics.
I’d recommend this to readers who would be interested in reading about drama between estranged family members and the difficulties the average American family deals with on a day-to-day basis. For those who feel like their family is fairly normal, but that normal is dramatic, a little crazy, and everyone’s just waiting for the ship to hit the iceberg, you should read this book.
An easy sailing book reading wise with a deep-diving look into complicated family life.
