Joyce remains even now an excellent author, with an unparalleled capacity for insight into the human experience.

Saw a definite progression throughout with the final story being so baller

This was my first exposure to James Joyce and I enjoyed it! I have little knowledge of Dublin's history or culture, so many references went over my head. Thankfully it didn't hinder my immersion in Joyce's world, especially with the variety of stories and characters he presented.

This seems like a book that grows with you, with certain stories resonating more in different seasons of life. Definitely want to revisit this after I've familiarized myself with other relevant works.

Stories that hit:
- Araby
- Eveline
- The Boarding House
- A Little Cloud
- A Painful Case
- The Dead

Other than a couple of stories I didn't love I really enjoyed the overall collection. Joyce did a fantastic job giving us a slice of Dublin life at every level. He also really made the inner turmoil of his characters feel real very quickly. Their struggles extremely connected to the modern experience.

Beautiful accurate writing style, describes the atmosphere well. No stories with a real ending, more descriptions of situations and living environments. Symbolism sometimes comes across as outdated. 3½ stars.
