Enjoyed some stories a lot, others not so much. Was definitely more intrigued by the stories with women as their main focus. However I really like James Joyce’s writing style so do plan to read more by him!!

I couldn't figure out what to read for a while. I opened like 15 books and bounced off of all of them. Then I decided to read some short stories and opened this collection. The prose started to tickle the back of my brain on the first page. I thought Joyce was going to be difficult due to his reputation but these were anything but. They are just beautiful short stories which show people's changing relationships with Irish institutions. They make you feel in a very short space and several of them sent shivers down my spine or left me feeling cold and melancholy. Many of them seem genuinely radical for the time and I can see why it was banned and could not get published for eight years. I'm honestly floored at how good this was. A Little Cloud and A Painful Case were my two favorites. I also loved how while it was a collection of stories with different characters it followed a general human life cycle. And you know I'll be reading more Joyce.
