I heard it’s illegal to visit Dublin without bringing your own copy of Dubliners and reading it while sightseeing. Alas, it is fun to read about a guy going for a pint at O’Neills and realizing you did the exact same thing the previous evening. It also made me ponder what Joyce would think of today’s Dublin, filled with tourists to the brim. But let’s be fair: what makes Joyce interesting are his experimental stylistic antics. No one would remember Ulysses if it were simply a realistic account of someone’s day; people remember Ulysses for how it is written. In my view, Dubliners is pretty much a compendium of realistic depictions of people’s days told in an unremarkable style. Sure – ‘The Dead’ is supposed to be this insurmountable masterpiece of short story writing. But is it really that impactful? The story could have been cut in half with no great loss. The other stories are either marred by great melodrama or are plain tedious. I certainly agree that Dubliners has its value, as a historical document and as an example of Joyce’s earlier style. But I don’t believe it would be as widely praised if not for the later fame of its young author.

The ending to 'The Dead' was quite good. Its beginning epitomised what I found boring/disenchanting about Dubliners, meanderings of titular city-goers that ultimately often just felt underwhelming.

The heart of certain stories was in their imagery. 'Araby' was quite picturesque in its world building. The last bit of description of Gabriel's desire in 'The Dead' was good. The silk dress threads touching the floor from the chair it was draped over.
